whats odd is that as said above lt1 true 5.7 will have 327 on it, i infact have 327 on the inside of the timing cover i saw when i replaced the cam..... now had i looked at block casting numbers as well i could have found the issue a long time ago but i (assumed) that seeing the 327 number i was safe with a true 5.7

let this be good info for everyone just in case this happens to anyone else. i will post pics next weekend when i pull the motor to prove it says 327 inside the timing cover on a l99 motor.....
I don't know what you're going on about. The 327 has nothing to do with displacement..it's simply the last 3 digits of the block part number. The timing covers are interchangeable so it's certainly possible that they would have the same part number.

You can only be sure of the part number of the block by looking at the block as anything could be changed in the 15 years since that engine was built. Additionally, since it's in your car and they never came in F bodies, it's possible that the timing cover is from your 5.7 liter engine.

Relax and remember that the car is old and is not stock any more. People will give you good solid advice and are assuming that the car is stock. Don't get exercised with them if the advice doesn't fit your altered car....

The 327 marking is on the front/drivers side, not under the timing cover, and it's cast, not stamped.

You actually confirmed its a 4.3 block (odd that it was marked 327 on the front and 4.3 on the side???) and that it had aluminum LT1 heads on it? If that's the case, larger combustion chamber 4" bore heads on a 3.74" bore block that originally had smaller chamber heads would explain why the engine made even less HP that the 4.3L engine was originally rated for - low compression and screwed up quench.

It would be interesting to see what head gaskets were used........

He didn't really seem to listen to any of us from the beginning. I'd be interested to see if we get pictures of the so called 4.3 that has proof.
