So I decided to disassemble my opti
I just took the opti off and disassembled it, to my surprise, a screw had come out of the roter. Also there was a hole in the pick-up of the roter about the size of a hole punch (for paper) and another peice of metal floating around. This actualy was not surprising to me as the last opti I had, had the same problem. To tie it all up there was a redish dust all over the inside of the optical section. Leakage from the shaft inside and running ver the optical pickup.
I am converting to a vented opti this time and am only worried about the reocourance of the hole in th roter.
Any thoughts?
I Know not too many people have dissambled their opties as a $14 TO4 inverted torx bit isn't always accessible. But insight, is insight.
Thanks

Re: So I decided to disassemble my opti
You can use the head of one of the TB screws (or any T15 screw) as an E4 torx. My 94 had the rotor intact, but rust from the cheap carbon steel bearing retainer plate had plugged the optical sensor. You could see the rust marks on the housing from the water buildup.
Re: So I decided to disassemble my opti
Yeah this was a reman I put togeather a few years ago, it only seemed to be coming from a bad seal on the timing cover. and getting by the seal in the base of the opti.

Any thoughts as to why the metal pick up on the roter would melt away? Almost looked to be cut out by the electricity for the spark.
