First question.....Are you losing coolant? That could tell you alot right there. Alot of times if you just remove the radiator cap (while it's cool) and run the engine to operating temp, the coolant will look like it's "boiling" rather than flowing,.... if it's a head gasket. You can also pressurize the coolant system with a tool you can probably get from Auto Zone and see if it holds pressure or not. If it loses pressure you will see the leak if it's a hose. If it loses pressure with no leak, you're looking at a head gasket or something more serious than a hose. 
I blew a head gasket on my '95 and it just spewed billowing clouds of white smoke out of the tailpipe. Kinda looked like 007 with a smokescreen! HaHa!

you have white smoke comming from the exhaust also or just the enigne?
your vavle cover gaskets cold be worn and leaking oil and falling on the head and exhaust causing white smoke (which is oil burning)
