SERIOUS PROBLEM new motor LITERALLY smokin
Ok heres how it started, I have had the car running for about a week, it has about 50 miles on the new motor, but I did go out everyday and run the car for about 15 mins. Everything was fine except for that clutch fork I posted about, but anyway, yesterday, I put an ignition in(which I dont think had anything to do with the problem but could be wrong) then I let the car run for a bit before I took it for a ride, while on the drive the car started smokin and would die at idle, I got it home to find out it was smokin because there was alot of crankcase pressure and it was blowin oil up through the breather tube that goes to the TB, there was oil in the TB, my plugs were fouled out, weird part is that if I took the valve covers off, the car would not die, once back on it would die at idle, the pressure and smoke comin from the valve covers fills the engine compartment alomost instantly and the smoke billows out from theunder the hood, please help, have no idea what it is, the car is running rich as well. PLEASE GIVE ME ANY IDEAS.
Don't worry about why.... just do a compression and leakdown test to see if there are any obvious major problems. I wouldn't even attempt to run it under the conditions you describe.
Okay, I posted in the other forum about this.. but I thought I'd check in here too.
Did you do the installation of the pistons?
If so, did you check to make sure the gaps weren't all aligned for each of the piston rings?
Just a theory here or possibility, but I'm thinking he might have had the gaps fairly close and with some settling they became aligned thus allowing excessive blow-by after seemingly running great for a while.
Either way, as said in the above post and I said in the other forum. Get a compression test on it to pinpoint the cylinder.

i will be doin a compression test, but as far as the rings go, i put the motor together with my father who has proabbaly built about 40 SBCs in his life, I put the rings on and then he double checked them before we inserted the pistons, so i dont think thats it but mistakes can happen
Ok just checking out the possibilities. Seems odd that it would work for 50 or so miles then stop working.
Whatever it is, I'm interested to know the results of your comp./leakdown test.
Make haste on it and report back.

well after talkin to a guy at work that has been building race motors for years, sounds like i might have burnt a hole in a piston, if i do have to replace a piston, is there a way to change one while the motor is in the car, can i slide the oil pan out and take off the head or do i have to pull the motor, thanks guys
Pretty tough to burn a hole in a piston in 50 miles unless your at the track. I would think it's your rings, And if you are running super rich that will not let your rings seat as you are washing your cylinders with gas. Check you oil and see if it smells like gas
