smoke coming from cooling/intake system

Hi all,

I did a swap an LT1 from a caprice into a 1991 firebird. The swap went well but there is some strange-ness to the engine. I Had it running before I hooked up the air filter and radiator and strangely, there seems to be soe me type of steam / exhaust coming out of the intake and cooling orfices too. Is this normal for this engine? I assume not... It's a very light smoke, and it just carries out and up. I sniffed it, and it doesn't have much smell to it but it burns my nose.

The engine is a 1994 LT1 out of a caprice wagon. It was a digital dash, not that it should matter. I have a laptop hookup to the ALDL running freescan so I can find out some information if it might be helpful.

Is there any suggestions on tests to do which might help me determine what this is? I bought this engine on ebay, so I have never seen it run prior to now. The car drives around okay, idling is a bit low but I imagine this could be because of the un-expected content in the intake system. If I run off the MAF sensor, it runs for a few seconds then dies out. I can bring it back by jabbing the gas, then it just dies out again. If I unplug the MAF so it runs on tables, it idles okay, but a but low. I have seen it work properly with the MAF connected too, but not usually. Occasionally, it will sag and actually lessen the RPM initially if I give gas but then it will pick up the rpm after dropping some. Most of the time though, its response is good and the RPM just rises when I press the gas.

Perhaps this extra smoke content is being generated internally, and the MAF measures a different content than what is actually getting to the engine? But that wouldn't explain why it runs better on tables. I am pretty confused - I know about the steam vents these cars have but does that really produce this much steam/smoke in the cooling and intake system? And is there any test I can do to test this theory (Like maybe blocking off the cooling that circulates through the head to see if the smoke disappears? I believe this is where the steam vents are)

Any help is appreciated. It's been 8 months and I would like to drive this thing for once instead of working on it heh.

-Randy
