Smoke comes out of the engine!

1997 LT1 FORMULA

well today l tried to install new valve covers.. it fit but there was a hole on valve cover and smoke was coming out of there and l installed the original back. and returned the valve covers to shop. the valve cover gasket was so loose and l am not sure if it is sitting completely under the valve cover but for somereasion when l drive and stop at a light, smoke comes from under the hood. l have no idea what is goin on.. do you guys think that smoke coming from valves? maybe the gasket is not sitting all the way and there is an open spot?? (also l have multiple missfire, but this never happened)

someone please help..

thanks..

Only thing i can think of is your gasket is not seating int he valcover and excess oil is seaping out spilling on your exaust and burning.

That's usually what happens, right down at the back.
Those rubber gaskets are a pain.
I'm going with the reinforced ones next time around.

Re: Smoke comes out of the engine!

Back when I had smoke coming from under the valve covers, it was the piston rings. I first recognized the smoke when I installed a new breather element which went into the oil filler hole. Smoke was puffing out of there like crazy but obviously wasn't able to escape when I put the oil cap back in. If it is puffing smoke from under the valve cover while running, most likely your rings are toast.

as mentioned.. l watched, oil is spillion on to my exhaust and burning the oil and smells and makes smoke..

now l need to figure out how to make that damn gasket sit excatly...

You can try a dab of RTV in each corner to make it stay in place during the install.

Or trash the silly rubber ones and get something that will stay in place.

Mr. Gasket Ultra-Seal valve cover gaskets may be the most advanced, highly tested, and real-world proven gaskets on the market today. They're made from high-density cork-and-rubber gasket material that's bonded to a steel core for extra rigidity, to prevent the gasket from being sucked in or blown out. This construction means that they are non-shrink and non-stick, don't have to be re-torqued, and can be reused. Their extra thickness also adds a little clearance between the valvetrain and the valve cover.

I've got that symptom with my car. After I start it and let it run for a few I will see smoke coming from the filler cap

I had that same problem. I did what james suggested. Clean up the valve cover and put a small dab of RTV in each corner. If you don't want to use RTV, grease will work also.
