Smog Crap

Question Smog Crap

I have a 96 firebird formula and a friend of mine is replacing the head gaskets for me and there is a lot of smog crap and stuff i was wondering if it would be ok to remove this i also want to cap off the egr and remove the cats i know my check engine light would come on if i remove the cats but its ok i dont mind that so my question is, is it ok to remove all this stuff and be ok (There are no emmissions here)

You can remove the EGR and AIR components with no negative affect on the engine, other than perhaps a bit of detonaton when lugging the engine (thanks to no EGR). On the other hand, you won't gain any performance either, except for the 10# total weight reduction. You will get codes/SES light for removing EGR and AIR, but if you don't care if the SES light is always on, its not going to bother you. The fans may run all the time for the AIR delete codes.

With the deleted cats, you can avoid the SES light simply by using O2 "sims", or you can have any or all of the codes and lights eliminated with some PCM programming. That way if the SES light ever comes on for a good reason, you might get a clue that something in the engine is screwed up.
