small cam dyno's and 1/4 times

Just wondering what you small cam guys are putting down at the dyno and the track. My current setup is a stock head with a zz9. I will be going to the dyno in a couple of weeks and want to know what I should be looking for. I'm thinking of the area of 300+@the wheels for horse power ( I have a th350w/2500 stall and an 8.2" rear so it will be a little below the a4 crowd). Also thinking of probably mid 13's to possibly low 13's (the 3.55 gear and a th350 don't have the best first gear ratio) Just want some opinions/actual #'s you guys are having. thanks

I ran the times in sig. with the Hotcam and everything else listed. I'm not sure of the specs on the ZZ9, but I consider the Hotcam to be a fairly small cam. My car weighs 3,450 pounds empty, and 3,700 with me in it, so it's no lightweight. If you have adequate traction I think high 12's are certainly a possibility, and I would imagine you will dyno ~300-320 RWHP.

Re: small cam dyno's and 1/4 times

I am a huge fan of "small" cams...My previous cam in my LPE 383 was a 211/219 @ .050 with .533/.560" lift w/ 1.6s...I went 11.70s at 118 thru an A4 w/ 3.42s on BFG DRs. LPE can't find the chassis dyno #s from the build from 1995, but it made lots of power and was emissions legal. I just freshened the 10 year old combo w/ a custom small cam from Joe Overton which was a little bigger than the LPE and ground on a tighter lsa, but still considered way small for a 383...Although I was only able to get 3/4 of a dyno run before my driveshaft broke in half my car made 400rwhp and 430rwtq w/ a rich, safe 12:1 a/f ratio thru an A4 with a 3600 vig...The carnage occurred at 6100 rpm with hp still climbing...

The car should go low 11s at 120ish with this set up on DRs....

See Sig.
I'm upping it to a "mild" cam though, I'm going to go with the gm 846 (222/230 .542/.563 112LSA). I just want to get a little more out of it without sacraficing lowend/driveability.

The ZZ9 has a tad more duration than the Crane 104227 at 212/226 vs.
210/224, with the almost the same lift. I'm not sure about the rest of the
specs. You can see my mods list, dyno, etc. in my sig. My guess is if I had
long tubes, dyno numbers would be in the +20/+25 range or 328/354. I have
no idea what 1/4 mile times would be. Most would gain more from the long
tubes, but I have a very clean exhaust system so +20 is about all I would
expect to gain.

I would not consider a 224/236 a small cam. More like a mid range cam. Even
the hot cam is on the edge of the small cam boundary. Just my $.02

Thumbs up Re: small cam dyno's and 1/4 times

Great. Looks like people putting down some great power with these tiny cams! I guess that the "small" roller cams make more power then the bigger profile non roller hydraulic cams. I'm sure it has to do with the much more agressive ramps (higher lifts with shorter duration). The only problem is that I'm hearing is that the 3.55's I have in my rear with my th350 is equivilant to about a 2.73 or something in that area of a car with a 4l60e for the first gear so I can't launch as hard. But having a 3 speed I don't really want to up it to a 3.90 or 4.10 cause of the crazy rpm's around town lol.

I am starting to see that the hotcam is not really a small cam either. It is a 219/228 .525/.525 on a 112. Compared to these other small cams it seems a little bigger.
