Slotted crank hub?

Hey i just got a used hub/balancer and it has a big slot in it. My car did not have the hub/balancer with it when I got it but I have never seen anything like this. I was under the impression the hub goes on keyless. This is not merely a grove on the ID of the hub for a keyway but a slot through the entire thickness of the sleeve that goes over the crank. Is this thing trash or what?

As you are already aware, the stocker is not keyed. But there is no harm in putting a keyway in the hub, and installing a key in the slot that already exists in the crank. The fact that it is slotted does not make it "trash". Benefits of using a key are the ability to mark TDC on the damper, and know its correct, prevent the hub from spinning in forced induction applications, or even during accel or decel on high HP applications.

Is it a stock hub that has been keyed, or an aftermarket keyed hub?

It is a stocker that has been keyed. I got it from a fellow forumite that didn't inform me that it was modified so I just wanted to be sure. I already have the engine assembled and installed in the car but I guess it wouldn't be too much work to put another keyway in the snout would it?

You don't have to put another keyway in the crank. It's already there. You just need to get the correct key to fit in the slot.
