slop in new LT1 timing chain?

hey all, helping my friend work on his 96 z28. the new chain we put on it has about 1/4" play in it --left to right. i figured its a new chain anyhow, and buttoned her up.

anyone else find this when replacing with a stock timing chain. i put a cloyes double roller on my 93 and that thing was tight. any info lemme know...we should be trying to start it here near the end of the week.

thanks
brian

Cloyes makes an over sized crank sprocket for just this reason. I can tell you it make a huge diffence in my new Lunati chain.

Cloyes makes one for a stock style chain.

The oversized crank gear is the same as a SBC. They put the slop in the chain to relieve the pressure on the front cam brg. It has enough pressure driving the water pump. If ya got an electric WP then ya can run the "oversized gear". The small gear is LT1 spect only.

The WP pushes straight down. A tight chain pulls straight down were as a loose chain will pull off to the side in the direction of rotation, distributing the load more even.
There was NO mistake on the spects given to Cloyes,if there were don't ya think it would have been corrected after 12 years. It is the way the General wanted it and Cloyes made it. They also make one with "oversize" crank sprocket that is the same as SBC if ya want a tight chain.
