Silicone on the opti to seal?

A local shop smears clear silicone on the seal of the opti that seals the cap to the back of the opti. They say the optis last longer with it.

Anyone else try this?

Re: Silicone on the opti to seal?

I have not disassembled one yet because they have been troublefree for me, I don't know wether that seal could use the help or not. What I do know is the wiring plug at the top is the most vulnerable to moisture intrusion and a little silicon grease on the seal in that connector can help keep it sealed.

Re: Silicone on the opti to seal?

When I first put my 383 together after washing it would do the opti crap out dance. I pulled it and the only visible problem with it was the water coming in from somewhere, I used some sensor safe silicone on the seals of it and it is still going now 2 years later. I recently took it apart to replace the rotor that broke apart, I sealed it back together with silicone again after cleaing it good.

Re: Silicone on the opti to seal?

I got my opti from Autozone and had to put it together.. There's a thin, rubber, rope "gasket" that goes around the cap that seals it to the optical portion... When I took my original apart, the metal inside was rusted and had some oil in it... So even with that rope seal, things got in... When I sealed up my new one I used silicone around the entire edge of the cap and screwed it on the opti.. So with all that, I vote another yes to sealing it with silicone... It's certainly not going to hurt it.

Re: Silicone on the opti to seal?

Read what "96capricemgr" posted. The tower for the harness connector is one of the major sources of leakage. If you are sealing any part of the Opti, make that the first part you seal.
