I have heard that many times it will make noise more when cold or hot (cann't remember) given the same rpm. Unlike a loose rocker arm that makes noise all the time and a cam bearing that makes more noise the more rpm (independent of how hot/cold the motor is). Something like that.

Well not trying to scare ya. But the way I found out I had a collapsed lifter was it would act up kind of funky. Car would do this thing like it was missing. Well one day I fired her up, and I recieved the dreaded knocking noise from a bent valve

This is what I would do If I were you.

1. Find out what side of the motor it is comming from.

2. Tighten up the exhaust bolts on that side. (exhaust leaks can be very funky trust me)

3. pull off the valve cover , and look for loose valve train, if you find none. Then turn the car on, and see if you can pin point it with the valve cover off.(not hard unless its the passanger side, because the altanator need to be removed.)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. My car is kinda doing the missing thing. It's not bad, but it is almost like a lag and not a miss. I have done steps 1-3...that's why I think it is a lifter.

btw, what exactly happens when a hydraulic lifter collaspes? What could cause it?

When it "collapses" the spring on the inside of it breaks/loses tension, etc. That leads to the roller not being pushed onto the cam all the way, and being pushed too far inside of the lifter itself. It can lead to cam damage, bent rods/valves, etc. If your worried, pull all your lifters and push down on the tips to check.

Miles, stress, lost oil pressure, big lift or spring pressure on high miles, bad luck, particulate crap in the engine. Lifters start to go south around 100k miles and get worse from there on. It's not uncommon to have one go bad.

You have me scared now...........i have a tick tick tick noise during acceleration when it's cold. I don't hear it later.....also when i gas it it seems to respond slower than i would expect....but maybe it's in my head. Also it acts weid at high rpm like it's stuck and then jumps the last 500rpm and shifts. Should i check the lifters?

Plus the best i can muster at the track is 14.1 at 99.26.........i do have 2.73's and a gone posi, but maybe that could also be a prob.
