Should I Look Hp Or Torque?

If I Want A Fast Car In The Track I Need To Increase My Hp Or My Torque, Because I Had Seen Engines Making Less Than 300 Hp And More Than 500 On Torque In Truck Aplications, And Engines Making Alot Of Hp And Less Torque. What Is The Relation Betwen?

Re: Should I Look Hp Or Torque?

Torque gets the car moving and HP gives you your MPH, when building a motor they are both important, but I personally like more Torque than HP, the felling is soo much better.

just remember that HP is a bi product of torque.

i would look at both imo. hp is just a calculation form torque. its (torque*rpm)/5252, i believe. i think most people like to use torque as a standard

if it makes more torque at a given rpm itll make more hp at that rpm as well. if you want it to run hard you have to get as much air flow as possible. there are other aspects as important however; such as gearing, traction and a durable drivetrain. how much do you want to spend?

If you want a fast car down the track, you are not only looking for more TQ, but placing that TQ in the RPM range that will be seen the most on the track. (3500-6500 RPM). You sill need decent TQ down low to get you moving off the line though.

For daily driving, I like TQ as low in RPM as possible and to extend it as high in the RPM range as possible without sacrificing all the TQ below 2500 rpm.

Re: Should I Look Hp Or Torque?

Don't get overly caught up in the peak HP and TQ numbers...

If you want to go fast, you want a TQ curve on your dyno graph that starts high and stays high as far up the RPM range as possible before it drops off.

By default, this will give you good horsepower throughout your RPM range...

If you look at most big truck motors that are designed to tow, you get AMAZING TQ from a VERY low RPM. The TQ curve on these motors drops off too early in the RPM range to create an impressive peak HP on the curve... But they are great for towing...

WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS IF IS CHAPER START TO MODIFY MY LT1 OR BUILD A BIG BLOCK AND SWAP, SINCE I THINK IM ON THE LIMIT RUNING 200 NITROUS ON STOCK ENGINE AND I'M LOOKING MY NEXT MOVE.
IF I KEEP LT1 AND GO LE3 AND LATER STROKE LOYD TOLD ME THAT I WILL NO DO MORE HP WITH LT1 HEADS BUT SAYED I WILL MAKE A LOT OF MORE TORQUE.
OR I CAN BUILT A 502,540 OR EVEN MORE AND SWAP LATER, WHAT DO YOU THINK?

i wouldnt want to work on a big block 4th gen. you can make big power with a 383, you just have to rev it if you want to make the power on motor. the heads arent the limitation you think they are. if you are stuck with the stock intake you are going to be limited to about 440rwhp, even with a stroker. but i have seen several 396 lt1s that made 440 and on a 150 dry kit made 650-660rwhp w/ heads that only flowed 255-270cfm. on motor they peaked at like 6000, but on the bottle they kept making power up to 7000rpm.

you can make more then 440rwhp on motor, but you have to rev it. so youll need a different intake and cam then most people use.

HOW MUCH TORQUE ARE THIS CARS DOING? AND HOW FAST ARE THEY? 10'S? 11'S?

Re: Should I Look Hp Or Torque?

if i recall, the one that made the most power(665rwhp) peaked over 700ftlbs of torque. it ran low 11s on motor, we never ran it at the track on bottle. the owner was a street racer in midland.

Re: Should I Look Hp Or Torque?

STOP SHOUTING WITH THE CAPS ON!!!!!

The thing you need is the most TQ at the tires.... Gears and RPM help you get there.

If you can run more gear you can multiply the TQ more..... the only way to get more gear in the car is to spin the motor faster.

So all in all RPM and TQ when you have lots of both you are looking for HP. The most average HP you can have in a RPM range that the motor will run in will get it down the track the quickest.

Also it's HP to weight.... a Big Block is a lot of weight.
