Should I get heads/cam or just do bolt-on's?

95' Z
86k Miles
Lowered 1.5"
18" Wheels with 295/35 rubber in back

It seems as if the bolt-on guys that have added 1.6/1.7rr, LT Headers, EWP, CAI, Free Mods, Etc can get their car into the mid 12's consistantly

While on the other hand LE/AI Heads cam guys can get into the 11's with the proper suspension (not lowered), stickier tires, headers, supporting mods etc.

Flip side of the LE/AI Heads cam guys are 12's on lowered cars that dont have sticky tires.

So either I am way off, or since I want to keep my car lowered on non sticky 18's Id probably be better off just doing bolt-ons since I wont be able to hook with heads/cam anyways.

Any thoughts?

I'd start with the headers(and a tune) first since you'll need them anyways as a supporting mod to the heads/cam if you decide to go that route. These and the 4.10 gears will be a BIG improvement over where you are now!

I have 4:10's already (forgot to mention) and I have a spec stage 3 waiting to go in.

I would do the bolt-ons first and cover your basics, then move up to a heads/cam package. Its kind of pointless to put on a lumpier cam and better flowing heads only to be restricted by stock manifolds.

Ya im with you on that. doing the bolt-ons or the heads/cam/bolt-ons...If I did heads cam, Id do all the supporting bolt-ons etc. Really what im getting at is that with a lowered car you cant hook, so would the heads/cam really be worth it? If i can have a 12sec bolt-on and a 12 sec heads/cam...why would i spend 2 grand for heads when I could just do the bolt-ons and still have a 12sec car.

depends what you want. when you are lowered and have 18s it doesnt seem like the quarter mile is your cup of tea for measuring performance. when you arent accelerating from a dig, the power difference between the two will something to consider, its up to you if you want the extra 100 or so horses to lay into on the highway etc

Re: Should I get heads/cam or just do bolt-on's?

Most Bolt-on cars are not consistantly going in the 12's at all. More like mid to low 13's. The only way to get mid 12's from a bolt-on car is with a serious suspension and tranny set up for the 1/4 mile.

Just because the car is lowered doesn't mean it won't be fast. Yes, it will be harder to hook, but not impossible. There's nothing wrong with heads/cam on a lowered car.

Do the bolt-ons first, and drive that a while, then step up to the heads/cam. You have to do bolt-on's before heads cam anyway.

Guys with bolt-ons and cam are normally in the 12.0-12.9 range. Heads/cam guys are anywhere from 11's to low, low 12's usually. At least that's been my experience from being on this site for the last few years and multiple trips to the drag strip.

Either way you go, with a manual, your going to have problems hooking up without stickER tires. Wether its lowered or not.
