Re: Shorties with H/C?

Then you need something better than a 1-5/8" shorty.

Cool, good to read that you understand how I feel like I lose power up top. Like yours had a potato stuffed in the exhaust.

Right now with my ported lt1 heads CC503 cam and other mods this is my best time slip

1/8mile
8.49s
83mph
1.9 60ft street tires.

Could my shorty headers be hurting my performance?
Once again you still have issues. Most of it with your 60', get some DR's. It would'nt hurt to change to a 3:73 gear. My bet is you still have the stock Y pipe installed, the biggest bottle neck and you are probably short shifting.

I'm not from Missouri but this would be something that I'd like to see.....maybe you could do a dyno run with the shorties and then after adding the long tubes.

I remain skeptical.....but I'm willing to learn!

Haha gross, I hope I don't have a stock Y pipe. I don't believe I'm short shifting. I datalogged it, it shifts at 6200-6400. If think at that high of RPM and a stock y pipe and even my shorties would be restrictive.

I know I need drag radials for the track. I'm just trying to be careful with my rear end. And like I said. I street it more than I track it. I only go to the track when I get new mods to see if my time increases.

I'd like go dyno it with shorties and see the results, then do longtubes and see results, but I don't have a lot of money to spare. Ill definitely have 2 comparable time slips for ya though

Re: Shorties with H/C?

You can't compare a set of shorty headers with the stock Y and a set of long tubes. Apples and oranges. Removing the Y is where the power comes from. I run 8.1 @ 84 with the stock cam and some bolt-ons with a shorty header.

The Edelbrock shorties were discontinued some time ago, but I'm pretty sure they came with a new Y-pipe. Here's a photo from an old for sale listing on this site.

Re: Shorties with H/C?

I went from stock manifolds to long tubes. Here are the various mods with times/mph.....

5/22/08
Baseline stock with K&N CAI and Flowmaster catback.
Warmed up:9.1@80.322mph
Full cool down:8.9@82.436mph

10/03/08
CC503, 1.6 NSA Pro Mag Roller rockers, stock heads, stock exhaust manifolds, catback exhaust, K&N CAI, FMS 30# Injectors.
Warmed up:8.882@83.770mph
No full cool down run.

2/19/11
Added Kooks Long tube headers(1 3/4" x 3") and dual cat y-pipe.
Warmed up:8.437@87.88mph
Partial cool down:8.389@88.354mph

The above came from this...

Your time is on par with mine, but the mph could be telling of how much better a good set of long tubes may perform. Again, just be aware that I went from stock manifolds to long tubes.

I was trying to figure out why your time is so much better given that the sixty foot is only 0.1 off mine given the mph difference(most all my good times have a 2.0XX sixty foot). I suppose it could be the better breathing heads. Mine are still stock. I wonder if the auto+Yank converter is the reason? I guess it is a combo of the heads/auto/converter.

Re: Shorties with H/C?

Is yours a 6 speed? They tend to have higher MPH and autos seem quicker.

And ya im sure my heads help a lot. It can get all that air in but not out because of the
1 5/8 shorties I'm guessing.

Re: Shorties with H/C?

Yeah, mine is a 6-speed manual. I have noticed that the autos get good times with low mph compared to the 6-speeds as well. With the street tires, I have to come out of the hole so soft that it usually bogs when I floor it. That might be a tuning issue....I'm not sure(or just the way I'm driving the manual).

I think there is more in your combo with a good long tube, but it may not be the leap like I had going from stock manifolds to long tubes.

A set of slicks on both our machines will do wonders for the times, but like you, I want to keep my 10 bolt in one piece.

Can you post the 330' numbers?

Long tubes with my income tax for sure. Already getting parts together. Got a new pair of Ac delco o2 sensors for $26 each.
