Shop is pulling heads to fix stripped plug........This sound right?

Well I left the car at the shop today. They will be pulling the heads. I asked about using a helicoil and they said that it was damaged to bad and the heads will need to come off anyways since it is the #2 plug, under the alternator with no room to do it in their.

However, the machine shop said that they were not going to helicoil it but SLEEVE it. Can somebody tell me what this is and does this sound like the right thing to do.

sounds like they will use a solid thread repair insert, as opposed to a helicoil, which is a coil of wire

I prefer the solid ones myself, stronger

Cool

sounds right.

if you were contemplating larger roller rockers or head porting now is the time if both heads are being pulled.

I 100% agree with that. If you've thought about ANY head work, now's the time, especially if they're coming off.

question how much are they charging to fix this head, you know you can pick up a used set of heads anywhere from 100-200 bucks

Ummm......yeah, you may want to look at just buying another set of heads.

Hey, that way you can take your time getting the one set fixed, maybe helicoil all the plugs, and have them ported too with no downtime to your car!

You didn't say what cyl,but if I were short on cash I would Heli- coil it on the engine with grease on the drill and tap to catch shavings,If you can get to it and never look back.

For that price... I'd just Helicoil it... try $15.00 bucks complete from auto Zone... and call it a day.

Well they already started taking it apart and I figured...I tried already and I failed, rather have the job done 100% right. As well the threads are stripped like 100% so I do not think I will be able to find the right abgle without taking off the heads.
