Shoebox - Question about method 3 adjusting rockers...

After I got the car all done I still have one rocker that is clacking a little bit. If possible could you explain exactly how to do that method... Should I loosen all the rockers first??? Also, how do I know when the valves are open or closed, by looking at which pushrods are up and which are down??? If you could take me through it step by step I would be much thankful. Pretend you are talking to an idiot, like "Adjusting Rocker for Dummies" or something like that. Thanks =)

Honestly, I don't know how I can make it any easier to understand. Watching the pushrods is the most reliable way to judge lifter travel. When the pushrod comes up, the rocker should make the valve go down (open). When the pushrod is fully down (valve up/closed), you should be on the base of the cam lobe (no lift). This is when you want to adjust lash and preload.
It is hard to watch the pushrods if you have to manually turn the engine. I personally use method 1 with no problems. It is easy and reliable for me.

Is there a way to accurately find #1 TDC if you know the mark on the hub is not in the correct position??? I know I can stick something in the spark plug hole to get an approximate TDC but it needs to be exact to adjust 8 valves... So how would I go about doing that?

Also, which valves are intake and exhaust?? I'd think that the two most middle valves (cylinders 3/5 and 4/6) are exhaust because of the valve arrangement and the valves closest to the front of the car for cylinder 1/7 and 2/8. Is that correct?
