Shelf storage life of a starter

I just wanted to know if a starter can rust inside or will get some problem if it being store on a shelf for a period of time(i mean years).

I ve began to collect some spare parts(opti, coil, gasket of all kind) and right now my starter is shot and i want to buy 2 to have one spare.

Thanks

just a question : as quickly and easily as you can get one at the local parts store why would you want to keep an extra around? i could understand if you came accross one at a good price or free
