shaving lt1 heads
shaving lt1 heads
I have tried seaching and cant get what im looking. I have a lt1 with 80k miles. Ran great and im doing a budget build I had a cc306 cam sitting on my self so put it in although its to big. Now the question it I want to have the heads ported when I do I wanted to shave them. How much can I take off without have valve clearence problems. And still run pump gas ? The motor is stock bottom end full bolt ons. Also while the motor is out should I put in arp rod studs?
Thanks Dustyn

You mentioned a budget build, what exactly are you building? Bottom end, top end, both? What are your goals? There are supporting vendors on here who could probably put a package together, using most of your parts, to build a nice street car. You also said full bolt ons. You may want to add a signature with the bolt ons listed, makes it a little easier for the forum to help you out.
I think most of us would agree that you need to set a goal and a budget, then go from there. With that info, you'll probably get a lot more input from those of us who have been in your shoes and already worked thru the good, bad and ugly of building these cars.
I remember reading on here somewhere and I'll pass it on. There are 3 things to these cars. Speed, reliability and cheap....you only get to pick 2

Re: shaving lt1 heads
If it were me, I think I'd leave the heads stock until I could afford an LE or AI port job. Since quite a bit of power is in the heads, don't cheap out of them if possible.
I can't address your original question directly, but the safest thing to do would be to check the piston to valve clearance, as the heads are now, with the new cam and that would give you a good idea how far you can go.

Re: shaving lt1 heads
+1 Check PTV now, that will help decide how far to shave the heads. Might as well check quench too as this could lead you to a thinner head gasket affecting PTV.
In general though, from all of the recent research I've done lately, your PTV should be fine but always check to be sure.

Re: shaving lt1 heads
Doing the same build as you, I am going with 280 xfi cam with a stage 3 port and bowl. Ported and matched intake runners with boltons. I want to keep the CR around factory specs which is 10.25-10.5. The guy at the shop said my combo will be close to 450hp. New rear end here I come =), although I seen 10.9s with stock drive train.
Re: shaving lt1 heads
Hate to say it but this is a recipe for disaster. You may want to reconsider your approach and start from scratch. There is so much wrong here it's hard to comprehend. I could go into it but maybe through the search feature you'll be able to find out where you're going and why it is such a poor plan.

Re: shaving lt1 heads
They say the stock LT1 can take up to around .620" lift however, milling, changing the head gasket and rocker ratio are all factors of available lift and must be considered. Just do the math.
Re: shaving lt1 heads
Not sure what is wrong with the stage 3 ported 643 heads and the 280 xfi comp cam? People run up to 600 horse with stock bottoms and like I said 10.9s with stock rear and trans. I am sure it's less then ideal and they are running these cars on borrowed time. I don't intend to drag the car but maybe once in a blue moon a little light to light.
