ses problem
ses problem
I got a 97 z28 and just insalled an OR-Y. Things were great for 2 days until I got an SES code. The guys at the shop said it was an EGR problem but I forgot to write down the exact code. I got the code cleared but it came on 2 days later again. I've checked the o2 simulators on my friends camaro and they are working properly. I've also read somewhere about EGR and backpressure. I am running pacesetter shory headers, OR-Y, and a straight pipe as a muffler. Any suggestions on what might be the problem will be appreciated. Thanks.
Very common on the OBD-II cars (96/97) to get an SES light for inadequate EGR flow, when you reduce the backpressure in the exhaust system. Installing an offroad Y-pipe, on top of your headers was probably enough to cause the problem.
The only way you can be sure is get it scanned, get the exact code, and look it up in the tables at Rob/Shoebox's website, or the AutoTap website. The code tables that many shops use, or that show up on some scanners are very "generic", and often not model specific. There are several codes for EGR issues, including problems with either the EGR valve, the EGR solenoid, or others.

No, no cats. I still have my old setup so worst comes to worst Ill just throw that back on. I don't mind driving around with my ses on its just I'm worried that something else may blow up and I won't know about it. I will get the exact code asap and post it here and look it up. Freckin' obdII.
No, the plates won't cure the SES light. The PCM looks for flow by watching the MAP sensor. If it doesn't see flow... whether its because the valve is stuck, exhaust system backpressure is too low, or you installed blockoff plates, it turns on the light.
I'm pretty sure my egr problem had to due w/ out enough back pressure. I bolted back on my flowmaster muffler in place of my straight pipe and the ses light went away that night. gg. =)

I'm having similar problems when the engine is cold! I recently had an ORP and hooker LT's installed. I unhooked my 02's and the "stumbling when the engine is cold" went away
Geeez, I just got hooker LTs and an off road y-pipe and am having the same problem. No power loss or anything just the SES. Will it hurt anything? I am getting it scanned this weekend.
