SES light but reader wont read at all

I got a Service Engine Soon light today and
before bringing my car to Autozone, we tried to read the code with a hypertech scanner for a dodge truck, it threw an error when tring to communicate w/ the vehicle

brought the car by Autozone to get it scanned.

The scanner they used (the $149 one they sell) would not even turn on when they tried to read it

He insisted that my port was dead

went back home, used the hypertech again, and it went through all the same steps as before, and threw an error because it couldnt reconize the vehicle

Its been 500 miles since my Header install, and i still have the factory sensors, What can I do to fix this problem

Im going to get the car read at a different autozone tomorrow to make sure it wasnt the reader he used

Thanks

Are you still running an OBDII PCM? If it's OBDI you won't be able to read it with an OBDII (96-97) scanner.

It has a custom program so a normal scanner will not read the codes even if it was an OBDII computer.

Why not? The programming doesn't affect the communications protocol. I've scanned numerous OBD-II cars with custom programming.
