service engine soon, misfiring, and voltage bouncing???

I went to AutoZone to see why my service engine soon light was on and they showed it to be misfiring. I also notice that my voltage is bouncing would this have to do with the misfiring or do I have two problems? Also I have an MSD 6A Ignition if you need to know that. Does anybody know why it is misfiring and if it has to do with the voltage? Thanks for any help.

Re: service engine soon, misfiring, and voltage bouncing???

You need to do a couple of things. First, check your oil on the dipstick for a fuel smell. If so forget about running the engine for a while. Next, have someone hold the throttle so the car is running about 1500 to 1800 while parked. While that is going on, measure the voltage across the battery and confirm it's about 14 volts. Now let them lower to engine speed to idle under its own control. Now see what the voltage across the battery is. If it's low, you need to check a couple of things first. Grounds on the frame, the negative and positive cluster near the battery, the ground on the engine near the starter and near the ICM. Don't just grab them to see if they are tight, remove them and be sure they are clean and shiney and replace them.

If all that is good, have the battery load tested.

What was the number of the exact trouble code(s) that was found?
