MauriSSio, very good reply... 10's is big boy stuff like you said... but ive been around drag racing all my life and thats what I want to do. I've plenty of friends that have ran deep in 8s that have already said that they would help me...

But your right about cops... smog... and the expensive bottom end

Its either a full blown race car, or a mid 12 ride, mid 11's on the gas...

Maybe thats what i'll shoot for a more streetable car... hell 12SCNDZ hit a 12.0 with a cc305, a very streetable cam...

THANKS for all your input, especially MauriSSio

-Robert

Ported heads, cam, Vig 2800, usual bolt ons will get you high 11's or close. Then tack on a 150 shot and that should land you in the 10's.

custom ground to suite your rpm range, gear setup, head flow characteristics and so on. I will be going with a custom ground SR cam over the winter..

It has been done. Traction plays a vital role.

This is very true, set a car up right and it will run. Plenty of people have done it. Mike Graham was doing 10s on stock heads with a cam and gas. Frank B does 11.5s with a tiny 210/224 cam. Get the suspension set up right and with tractions its not a hard goal.

Damn! I knew there was something I was forgetting...LOL Does this mean I'll have to pull the stock suspension out of mine to get that last 5/100's?

Seriously folks, this things got all factory stuff right down to the 95,000 mile shocks.

Damn y'all are nuts. If the stock shortblock is in good working order, there is no need to touch it IMO.
There are two parts to this equation: traction and power.

The traction issue, and how to solve it, is self evident.
Making the power on the stock bottom end is another story. If it were me, I would get a killer heads and cam package from the likes of Advanced Induction that would make 400rwhp on motor. Several of my friends have this setup and all run high 11's/low 12's at 117+ mph NA on street tires with stock 3.42's in a 10 bolt. With a 12 bolt, a gear, and slicks, that's easy mid 11's.
Add a 150 shot to a combo like that, tune it nice and rich and safe, and run mid to high 10s in the upper 120's all day long, on the stock untouched shortblock. Run some good gas when you spray it and it should last quite a while.

Hell, I know several people with A4 cars that have run 10 second passes on stock 10 bolt rears and make em last for 2 or more seasons.

Robert shoot me an email, I may be able to help you crack off some decent times on a stock bottomend if that's your goal.

10s is pertty damn fast, IMO. Youll want to do it right the first time and just build a forged bottom end now. I was intially going to do just an LT1 longblock swap when I needed another motor....that turned into a $11k forged/h/c/nitrous/etc buildup(lots more than just engine parts in that). Youll feel much better about it and enjoy the car more when you know your bottom end is bullet proof for the most part.

BTW, if you do a rebuild...that take the time to powdercoat parts and make it look nice also. It so cheap to do and makes it look so much nicer. I see so many people that had their whole motor apart for a rebuild and then put it back together and it looks 100% stock(ugly silver/grey aluminum) but with lots of HP. I got all my parts powedercoated by Noble Coating off ebay. He did a total of 17 parts/pieces for me....for only $150 plus shipping

Grease has the GM 847 cam with Lloyd Elliot heads, last I talked to him he was happy with the cam + heads. He'll be in the 11's this year i'm sure of that.

Shoot him a PM, he's a good guy!

Was a bad *** car. That was before his rearend locked up and the car went into the wall at HRP. Hes putting the motor in a foxbody.

As far as emissions you dont have to do much to get a sticker. In Houston you do have to pass a smog test but thats easily bypassed either with a computer or a couple $20's. My car is registered in Austin county and all the guy does is check that your lights are working.
