Secret to drilling into a bolt?

Well im trying to drill into the bolt that broke off when I was bolting down the Waterpump. I got this Drill-out kit from sears for 40 bucks. Well im sitting here trying to drill into like it says on low speed, but its literally taking forever. I get like 1 MM every 10 minutes. It says to use some cutting oil that I dont have ofcourse. Would this oil help me you think? Ive even tried it on high speed like it said not to..and it helps out a bit, but its gonna take me a week to get it in deep as it should be.

Um, yeah, cutting oil helps a lot. You can get by with some regular ole motor oil, you don't have to go out and buy cutting oil for one hole.

ALso, low speed is better for metal, high speed is for wood.

If you've been trying for that long you may have burnt the blade off of the bit. Without oil (or even with oil) the bit gets so hot that the edge wears off and then you just drill and drill but get nowhere. It's happened to me a few times. Get some oil and a new bit. Take a break every 30 seconds to let the bit cool!

What size thread?

If you are not making chips, you are just dulling the drill or workhardening the bolt. You need a considerable amount of thrust (pressure) on the drill to make chips especially in a Grade 8 or even Grade 5 bolt (waterpump is not over Gr 5 or metric equivalent I'll bet). Depending on the size, you could easily break the drill if you bend it by not pushing straight in. Low speed, high push.

Motor oil will help a little. Try not to get things hot.

That drill out kit you got when you use the bit the drill has to be in reverse when drilling says on the instructions should drill easy when done right.

That would make a big difference. A bit is designed to cut only in one direction. If you have no other lubricant use some WD-40 and keep it wet.
