Schrader Valve on a 93

Hi guys,

So my car broke down at the middle of an intersection yesterday. I was idling at a light and it just turned off & would not start back up.

I changed the opti recently and I'm thinking this may be a fuel issue. Just to be sure, I replaced the fuel filter - Still won't start. I rented a fuel pressure gauge from the local auto parts store and I'm attempting to check my pressure for the first time.

I'm having a tough time locating my schrader valve. All the articles I came across said on 93's, it was on the passenger side fuel rail. I noticed something that looks similar (with no cap) on my drivers side rail. Is this the correct spot to check for fuel pressure?

Also, any tips for a newbie on the procedure? I'm hoping this test will confirm it's the fuel pump so I can begin tackling it. When I turn the key, I can hear the fuel pump engage. However, after I replaced the fuel filter & primed the car a few times - the pump seemed to become much weaker sounding after the second and third key turns.

Thank you so much in advance

The 93 F-Body shop manual shows the Schrader valve on the driver's side, right where you found it. I suspect the references to the passenger side may have been for the Corvette LT1's, since their fuel connections were on the opposite side.

What pressure are you getting after the pump primes?

Thanks for the quick response.

When I turn the key, it stays at 0. Although I did just change the fuel filter and relieved the pressure with the gas cap. Not sure if that will affect the reading.

All of the articles I come across indicate to check the fuel pressure while driving. The problem is, the car will not stay started.

Any ideas on how I can diagnose it without being able to start?

Thank you in advance

Pull the vacuum line off the fpr and see if it smells like gas. If so i'm pretty sure its leaking and bad.

On mine I have to be careful how tight I thread the fuel pressure guage on. I havent had much luck using the 90 degree fitting that comes in the kit. I also rented one that was missing the part that will depress the valve stem in the schrader valve. You can cycle the key a few times and it should move the guage if pump is building any pressure. You dont have to check pressure with it running even though its helpful with some things. If you get the guage to start moving then cycle the key a couple times and watch if it holds pressure. If it leaks down fast that points to injectors or the fpr. As said above if you have fuel in the vacuum line going to fpr thats a sign it needs replaced. Once car starts you can disconnect the vacuum line as it simulates full throttle. It can be helpful taping to window and driving as well for further diagnosis but you should get over 30 psi just priming it(ideally close to 43). There is also a fuel pump prime connector on pass fender coming from pcm that can be jumped with a hot wire to do it under hood and run pump longer.

also if you are at idle testing it will raise when disconnecting the vacuum line(probly 5psi +or - depending on cars idle vacuum)
