Oil leak in an odd place.

I got my car back together after a lung transplant, it was running great sounded bad ***. I ran it for a while on the stands through 3 heat cycles. Today as I was about to take it off the stands I noticed a oil drip. At first it looked like the oil filter was lose. After a few minutes and having to crawl under a running car (which I hated very much) I noticed the leak was coming from the oil cooler/heater fitting but not the one that is held on by the one center nut #140 on the drawing. It was the 4 hex bolts behind that. As you can see the drawing show no gasket there. So now here is the obvious question what is there? It comes off so there must be an o-ring there? I inspected all around it to rule out anything leaking from above it.
So fumed, it's like going on a date with a hot chick to find out she has a *****.

I'm pretty sure you can just remove the whole oil cooler assembly anyway. Thought I just saw another post with a similar problem.

I thought about it given it some thought and reading about the topic I chose to keep it. The diagram does not show any gaskets there and I'll guess the only way I'm going to find out is when I pull it apart today.

Re: Oil leak in an odd place.

I spoke to a Chevy mechanic who had a quick look at mine. He wanted me to replace the oil pan, which would be some 130 bucks. His other idea was to replace the gasket (but my thought is that if it was bad, it'd be leaking from more than that general area ) It's dripping from 3 spots, near the oil filter, just like you thought.

As a standard fix, I always replace oil and filter (along with plugs and wires etc...) when I get a car, on this one it would've been ~2k miles ago, probably less. I doubt it would be that, but I'll take a look at all of it tonight, and hopefully get to the bottom of it.

Gotta love Shoebox and all his diagrams.

We wish you well in the future.

Please let us know if you find/solve the problem.

Thanks,

Al

haha if you decided to keep it what does that say about the date with a hot chic with male parts lol. If you have plans for headers I assume it has to go(mine didnt have one).

Re: Oil leak in an odd place.

Okay I found the problem, if you look at #140 http://shbox.com/1/oil_cooler.jpg there is another plate behind that which is held on by 4 hex screws that is NOT on the drawing. I took that off and was careful since I noticed a metal gasket there. Pulled it out and found an O ring, replaced the O ring and put a smudge of high temp silicone around the metal gasket making sure that I got none near the O ring. Started it up and it is nice and dry. Now if I can find that damn throttle cable bracket I can go for a cruise =/.

I have full length headers and still retained the cooler. Cheap as the Pacesetters is I was impressed by the fit and how nice it tucks in under the car. Not to mention ease of access to the plugs, oh and I also dropped in a set of custom Taylor wire set from Thunder racing. I couldn't stand the factory configuration so I ran the plug wires over the valve covers. http://www.thunderracing.com/shop-by...rk-Plug-Wires/

must be pretty low profile or your headers drop lower than mine(1 7/8 stepped kooks also excellent fitment). I cant run the stock size wix filter im running about 3/4 shorter was for ss454 truck lol. Its nice to be leak free.
