I agree, it sounds like your getting power to the scanmaster but its not getting data. That is exactly what mine does when I unhook the data wire to hook up my cables for my laptop.

I have mine installed in the driver's side upper vent. My vent had a wisper of air flow so I'm not missing anything The Scanmaster works great in this location, especially since I have a dual gauge pod just above it on the A pillar. The Scanmaster housing will need to be removed to fit it in the vent.

Will the scan master detect how much retard and at what RPM is that retard happening?

Also, can it read off one of the wide band O2 sensors or does it come with one?

It intercepts the data stream that is present at the ALDL port below the knee bolster and displays the micro volts that fluctuate from the left bank sensor but can also show the average as well as individual o2 sensor output. You can go to fullthrottlespeed.com to read the full description and download the instruction sheet. Injuneer has a good explanation of what each function of the scanmaster LT1 does (shows).

The Scanmaster will show knock counts, as well as capture the max knock value for a WOT run. It will not show at what RPM the max knock occurred. It does not come with a wide band O2 sensor, as stated above, it's displaying the parameters, one at a time, that the PCM sees via the ALDL port.

Is this a misprint OBE1_95Z28? Capturing / recording the highest spark retard @ rpm as well as minimum O2 volts is a feature of the recall when held in conjunction with the mode button.

After reading again....

You are right OBE1; no rpm recall but mph only. Sorry for the contradiction.

For a single WOT pass, it indicates the lowest O2 sensor reading/the MPH at which it occured, and the highest knock count reading/the MPH at which it occured. From my writeup:
When you reach 75% WOT, the ScanMaster will start to record data. As soon as you pass 75% WOT, the third decimal point will flash for about 1 second, and then recording will begin. It will record the lowest average (right and left) O2 voltage and highest knock retard values seen during that WOT excursion. If you press the "RECALL" button, it will display minimum average O2 mV's on the left, and maximum knock retard on the right. While holding down the "RECALL" button, also press the "MODE" button, and the display will change to the MPH at which it recorded the minimum O2 and maximum knock retard.

Isn't it more helpful for tuning to know at which RPM is the knock retard taking place instead of MPH?

How would knowing amount of knock retard at MPH help the tuner correct for knock retard?

it cant read what rpms it happens at if that data doesnt go to the aldl port. you can figure out what rpms youre at at a given mph easily, not many variations in rpms with speed when youre at wot, only what gear youre in, wheelspin or clutch/tc slippage would change that.

No... in a 1/4-mile pass, you will pass through a given RPM three (A4) or 4 (M6) times. You wouldn't know which gear it happened in. With MPH, you can simply look at your shift points and determine whether it happened at the top of a given gear, at the shift point, etc. Does take a bit of thought..... but it works.

The RPM is at the ALDL port, so that's not the reason for not using RPM.
