Safe MPH downshifts for each gear?

This post is a REALLY good example why some time a slower car is able to keep up or beat a car that should be a lot faster. Some of you guys need to grab yours ***** and downshift to the right gear when racing

I agree, there are a lot of people out there who really don't know how to drive aggressively. I wasted a cobra twice the other day, BADLY. Not that my car shouldn't beat a slowbra, but i felt bad for the chap because he probably thought i was running a stroker or something when really it was just that he didn't know how to drive except to alternate revving it up and almost rear ending people in town, haha

If I'm up against real competition, I'll hit it when I need to. It's just never happened yet.
Don't act like I don't know how to drive. I'll let you drop it to 2nd from 60, but one of these times it might bite you.
I race most of the time from a stop.

You guys just gotta keep practicing the rev matches...even when someone wants to race, put the gas down AS you downshift and as you practice more and more, you'll realize in any situation you can rev match VERY quickly...you just need to practice so your feet develop the talent. I've got a hair under 35K miles on my 6 speed conversion in my hot cammed caprice now and I'm still mastering it. I'm almost there, it takes a lot of practice unless you've been driving stick all your life...for me, it's my first stick shift car...drove a few before I did it, but didn't have my own until this one.
And I decide if it's going to a safe mph by how the power feels...you learn the power curve of your engine, and you know by where you are in it if you'll go faster and still be at a safe RPM if you just downshift...heck I don't think I ever look at my tach or speedo when I'm racing...the speedo is there so I know I'm not going TOO far over the limit, and the tach is there in case I'm curious exactly what RPM I'm cruising at.
I probably should get a shift light for the track...but I'm doing alright as is.

JordonMusser,
I didn't mean that towards you. I agree with what you say in your post for shift points. Dropping it can be perfectly safe.
xxsaint69x,
Acording to my calculations, dropping it to 2nd at 60mph is 5800 rpm with 4.10 gears. That's above my freakin red line! How high do you rev your engine with that cam? There can't be much higher to go if you drop it like that. I'm just saying that you take more risk than I do. Also, unless you can shift at lightning speed, you might be better off dropping it to third, otherwise you may lose ground when you need to shift to 3rd after dropping to 2nd with no rpm's to go.
Mike454SS,
I totally agree with the shifting as the trottle is being pressed. That is exactly what I do. As the rpm is rising, my foot is letting of the clutch and the revs are normaly matched fairly closely. It's all done very fast. It's really not that hard. Even if you overshoot the rpm, it's not that bad. It's kinda like droppping the clutch off a launch, but you normally don't overshoot that much when trying to rev match. I guess after driving my car for 6+ years and 55,000 miles, I've got used to the downshifts and upshifts.
