safe to break in motor without tune?

well ive got a 383, 11:1, le2's, big HR cam, etc and i am wondering if it will be safe to run my car at all without a tune ( 15 mile trip to tuner) also, i have a pcmforless mail order tune for a full bolt on/cam only car. would it be smarter to put that in, or leave it as stock

If you run that without a tune, not only will it refuse to idle, but it will run extremely rich (which can wash out the rings). I would personally trailer it there.

No idea on the mail order tune that you have.

One would think a "kinda close" tune is better than a "clear out of wack" tune. But I do not know.

i know man im thinking the same thing. like logically it makes sense that it would run closer to good on the other tune but i know if i do, something will blow up, then when i post it, everyone will be like wtf why would you do that you dumbass lmao

What size injectors, and were they in for the mail order tune?

Why not trailer it there?

Get your tuner to give you a base tune that is close enough to drive at part throttle to his shop.

He ought to be able to guesstimate within 25% and would be doing that as a first step anyway...

If it's at least not tuned for the 30's, I wouldn't drive it. Or, you could drive it to the shop with the stock injectors and switch them out when you get there. Too bad it's not a 94/95 I would send you a starter tune.

Not sure exactly what that means - but if you mean "can I do that at home" I'd say just take the PCM to your tuner to install the baseline tune.

Exactly, have something somewhat safe to start with.
Depending on the size of the cam, it may be tough to tune it remotely and your only choice may be to trailer it.

I'm in that boat right now, but my cam has 34* of overlap LOL so it's a
little tougher to tune than your typical HR street cam.
I'll be trailering mine from KC to Tulsa in a few weeks.
The base tune was simply too rich to drive (less vacuum than expected).

$55 for a trailer is a hell of a lot cheaper than ruining a new 383.

what i mean by that is my cars a 93, its obd1 and i was under the impression you cant flash my pcm like the latter models

so what your saying is bring the pcm itself to the tuner and he will be able to give it a base retune just to get the car to the shop? im sorry if im soundin dumb here i was just under the impression that to tune an obd1 car you had to install a modified "chip" which is like what i have now, the mail order "chip" sitting in my room. i didnt think you could just wipe out a tune and form a new one like on the obd2 cars

james- i totally get what your saying, $55 is chump change when you melt down a forged 383 and yea i wish it was a 94/95 because i know u can just reflash em and i appreciate u offering yours to me

You're car needs a chip. Also 94-95 is also OBD1 but you can "retune" the pcm without a chip (just so you know).
I was under the impression (for whatever reason) that you could get a trailer (or barrow) from someone for free. Since you can't, I see why this is a concern.

No need to take your PCM to the tuner for a start-up tune, he can simply send you another eprom/chip.
