???? Rust on crank?

OK I bought an engine about say 3-4 months ago. I have left in on my front porch since. I finally got it on the engine stand and flipped it over to take the oil pan off. Once I remove the oil pan I am shocked. The inside looks more dirty than a blown up short block I just pulled from a rolling chassis that has been sitting in the rain for over 2 years with no top end on it. There is surface rust on the crank and the rods don't look very clean. Kind of like residue of dirty oil. This was suposedly a new rebuilt engine with all new parts.

What do I have to do now?! Does the engine have to be taken somewhere to be cleaned and have the rust removed or what. How the heck did rust get on the crank? Should I put oil in the engine while I let it sit while I buy parts for the car? Or can I just carefully remove the rust myself with something???

This makes me so mad...

Re: WTF? Rust on crank?

as easy as it is to do, take it all apart and clean it in solvent. that will fix it up. if it needs new bearings, shell the extra cash for new ones. anything cast iron or any bare metal surface will surface rust quickly if exposee to the elements, or even left in the garage. when i store a good engine, i coat it with engine oil to keep it from doing so.

Re: WTF? Rust on crank?

I have never taken one apart fully yet except a junked up one where I had a lot of trouble pulling the rods and pistons out of it. I had to use a mallet to get them out. Is that safe on the rods to bang them with a mallet, this is my good engine and I don't want to take any chances of damaging anything.

Also, im assuming the white stuff packed all over the edges of the cam lobes is greese? It looks like there is quite a but all down the cam....?

Hahaha! Far from it. Im just in a small house right now so I had to improvise. Atleast my car has wheels on it!

Ok...maybe not far, but not quite there yet!

Re: ???? Rust on crank?

Sorry for the multiple replies.

Also, I assume the white grease looking stuff on the cam is normal?

Re: ???? Rust on crank?

The white stuff on the cam is probably assembly lube. Has the engine been run? The engine has been rebuilt. The engine has SRP pistons.

Re: ???? Rust on crank?

That dosn't even look too bad. That would rub off with some ATF on a rag. I bet the bearings are fine. If it was a fresh build it has assembly lube on the bearings so they wouldn't have gotten rusty like the rest.

Re: ???? Rust on crank?

OK, so far everyone has told me the rust would be fine. I was suggested to run it for a little but and change the oil. So I guess im ok. I was just worried because it was a new build and I was expecting to remove the oil pan and see nice bright new parts and I saw rust. LIke I said, the old 355 I ripped apart from the old engine looked twice as new.

Thanks for the input everyone, I will hopefully get this project on the road in the next couple months.

Re: ???? Rust on crank?

I agree you should be fine. As someone noted, rotate the engine and wipe the rust dust off the crank and go from there.
