I would also recommend doing it with the covers off. You won't get oil all over the place. At idle, oil will be just coming up the pushrod and drain over the rockers. It won't spray out beyond the valve cover mating surface (unless you rev the engine up).

is it necessary though? i'd rather go back to synthetic if i can. the dino oil has blackened really quick, and the synthetic stayed nice and light for over a year. i found some "Q" 20w-50 that i'll try, although i usually stay away from quaker state and penzoil. do you think 10-40 wold be too light for a race motor?
