really? hmmm.... i started it without the covers on before and i had oil launch all over the wall in the garage. mine idles at 900 rpm. i'll try it again though, thanks for the heads up

Each motor is different, but once it gets hot it'll definetely shoot oil.

it runs at 50 psi at idle, i'm not sure if that is stock pressure or not. i have a high output pump. runs around 60-65 psi when driving

At cold idle, my oil pressure sits about 60psi with the stock pump, and it wasn't shooting out past the heads. I had brand new GM lifters, chromoly pushrods, and scorpion rockers. My car idles around 750 or so.

would the fact that i run 20w/50 have anything to do with it? the builder told me to run that because it was a race only motor (before he did the cam swap ) and it had oil blow-by by the rings.

Re: running super rich, valve lash wrong??

is it necessary though? i'd rather go back to synthetic if i can. the dino oil has blackened really quick, and the synthetic stayed nice and light for over a year. i found some "Q" 20w-50 that i'll try, although i usually stay away from quaker state and penzoil. do you think 10-40 wold be too light for a race motor?

Your oil probably blackened because of it running super rich.
