Question Re: Running HOTTT!!! HELP!!

thanks for the replies fellas,

This is the second thermostat that Ive put in the car. (its a 160*) The car however still was running hot after, i took the thermo out and tested it with the boiling water trick. There is no possible way that there are any leaks in my system. I pressure tested my system myself, looked at the rad cap, all the hoses, clamps, heater core,ect... After that I even had the car at the dealership. He gave me some B/S about maybe the PCM is bad. But im running out of things to check, I might end up buying the computer just to see if it solves my problems... could a bad computer be causing my problem?

Re: Running HOTTT!!! HELP!!

well when you talk about no heat that tells me that you still have an air pocket in the system.

if thats the case the coolant level might be too low to cycle the fans on.
first of all the coolant system is designed to be filled with the carr OFF and completly cool. i had the same problems with my z and i had to follow the coolant flush method in the shop manual, it took me like 2 hours to fill the system with coolant, but when i was done, it had hot heat and the fans started working again.

if you would like pm me with your phone number and i can tell you how to fill the system the right way.
i`d post it here but i already have several times on other threads and its kinda a long procedure.

good luck to you though with your problem

Radiator a lot cheaper than a new comp. Check that out first.

Re: Running HOTTT!!! HELP!!

I'll go with "air in the system" too.

I've seen 3, maybe 4 lt1's with similar problems, usually after coolant was drained/refilled in some form or fashion. The last one was just a week ago. Friend of mine put a set of heads on the car and refilled the system. Car didn't necessarily run hot up until a certain point everyday in his trip to work. He said that he'd exit the highway and about a mile up the road the temp would start climbing. It'd get to ~260º and BAM, right down to 180 or so. Check the coolant later and it'd be about a quart "low". He refilled and the same thing happened the next day at exactly the same point in his trip. He brought it over that night and sure enough, it was about a quart "low" again. Filled it up and bled the system a few times just to be sure. Hasn't run hot since then but it did have my buddy scratching his head for a couple of days. It wasn't losing water (maybe when it climbed to high temps it purged a little from the overflow)... but water was being displaced by air in the system. This thing had a lot of air in it. I was surprised.

Re: Running HOTTT!!! HELP!!

I am experiencing a similar overheating problem and have tried just about everything. 1994 LT1 134,000 miles
- Water pump, radiator, thermostat, hoses, rad cap all new.
- Temperature rises from ambient to 260 within 6 minutes
- Fans are on manual control switch and both work/turning on heater makes no diff.
- System has been bled and is free of air pockets
- Coolant flow through engine block is good.
- No visible leaks
- With one spark plug wire disconnected the temp stabilizes at about 230 and finally stops increasing. Also the #2 plug looks black compared with the others which are light grey?
I hooked up one of those prestone back flush tees to the heater hose and ran fresh hose water into the system. At the same time I have a 4' section of hose diverting water out of the radiator fill neck to the ground. With this "life support" hooked up the car maintains about 170 degrees and runs great. However after unhooking the garden hose and putting the cap back on it overheated about 2-3 minutes later.
Good luck on your overheating problem. I'm still stumped.

Talking Re: Running HOTTT!!! HELP!!

YESSSSSSS!

I now have heat and no cooling problems...my heat was so hot that I thought my legs were on fire. I guess all it took was bleeding the HELL out of my system and a new water pump... thanks for all the help fellas...
