Running higher cam without a stall?

Just curious, what would it be like to run a higher cam [say cc306] without a higher stall be like?

Re: Running higher cam without a stall?

From what i've read, going with a big cam w/o a stall does a few annoying things...

First off, you'll probably be raising your idle. This will mean the car will try to move a lot more at a stop making you press the brakes harder. A higher stall is looser and largely negates this effect.

Second, it will probably feel like a pooch from a stop, as all your torque will be in the upper rpm's. The rpms while just cruising will be lower with your stock stall too, so surging might be a problem.

All in all it is definitely doable but I wouldn't recomend it.

Re: Running higher cam without a stall?

I put a ZZ3 cam in my Caprice without doing the stall or gears first. Now the Caprice is heavier but the ZZ3 cam is a lot smaller than the 306 as well. I gained almost nothing at the track, but later the stall converter gave me .8 even while swapping down to 87 octane tuning and still on street tires. That is much more than typical but it happened because the cam wanted it more than a stock cam would have, later mild 3.42 gears gained me another .2 and headers another .7, again those I really needed because I already had the cam. After doing it *** backwards myself I will say I did it wrong and you would be much better off to have stall/gear/headers all before the cam even for a street car.
