RPM surge + check engine light

Past few days when i am stopped at lights the car will surge rpms will go up and the car will lurch forward if i dont watch how hard i am on the brakes. Finally last night i started it up and it wouldnt run rught, Check Engine light came on and sounded like it was out of gas, the rpm's fluctuated and would not run on all 8 cylinders. I shut it off, and restarted it. after doing this three times the car fired right up fine, no check engine light, and ran perfectly. It still surges at lights once in a while, so i know it will happen again. Ideas? Thanks!

Re: RPM surge + check engine light

Get it scanned. Once the SES light comes on, the cause is stored in the PCM. It will stay there for a while, clearing itself only after a pre-deteremined number of "drive cycle" without the problem recurring.

OK i will do asap. The car has been back firing lately only once in a while when i stomp on it. It seems like its backfiring through the intake too.

EGR valve would be my first suspicion.

Re: RPM surge + check engine light

OK i will disconnect it, and plug the vacuum line and see if that fixes this problem. I am hoping that this will fix all my problems, (power loss, gas mileage decrease, stuttering, backfiring) i have pressed on the diaphragm of the egr before and it didnt move, i thought that they were supposed to....is this true?
Thanks
Jon

Re: RPM surge + check engine light

If you can get to it, you should be able to open the valve by hand (or use a vacuum tool) and it should kill or nearly kill an idling engine.

OK, i had the engine running and i tried it, pushed on the diaphragm and nothing happened. No movement, no stall....Guess its time to replace it.

Re: RPM surge + check engine light

IAC .... It never happened to me but I heard it gets sticky. the PCM tries to compensate with more action till it breaks loose and overshoots.... then the PCM Backs it out but ends up at the sticky point again.. Result is a Car that almost lurches up onto the passing traffic on a stop light. I call it Possesed car...makes you look really stupid if you have a girl in the passenger side.

The IAC Remove it and Clean it. Now about the Backfiring... I will defenetely think of the EGR. I can push mine by hand. Yours sounds like its stuck closed or open or almost open. (almost open )

Re: RPM surge + check engine light

ok, how can i clean the iac? What should i use? I am almost 100 % sure the EGR is bad, tonight it stalled while i was driving down the road out of no where. It was very embarassing because my girlfriend was making fun of my car having problems lately, and i defended the car by saying it was fine. not 5 mins later it just stalled. Its ok though, I got on it real good and wasted a Turbo CRX really bad and then that shut her up

Have you pulled codes yet? Before you start trying to guess what is wrong see what the computer tells you. If the F-body is the same as the Corvette on the 94/95 you can short pin 12 to pin 4 on the DLC and it will flash the codes.
