Replacement Catalytic

Hi - I have a bad passenger side cat on my 96 Z28. The local muffler shop wants $1300 CAD to replace it b/c they say you can only get the part from GM. Sounds pretty expensive.

The rattle in the cat is driving me crazy. Any ideas for a cheap fix/workaround or a good aftermarket option.

Thanks,

On my '95 (single Cat) I too had a rattle from it, very annoying when driving, or even at idle you could hear it. I jacked up car and it turns out it wasnt the cat, it was the flange between the Cat and the Cat-back, and it was rusted with holes and had weakened, it wasnt holding up tightly to the cat, I just re-tightened it.

Did they give you the oppertunity to look at it ?

I think we all know how muffler shops like to make money.

Dude, they are trying to rip you off BIG TIME, $1300.00 CAD??? How much is that in American?

You could get a brand new Random Technology cat, probably the best flowing cat in the market that ISN'T DRILLED OUT, those sell for around $275.00-$300.00, American, I don't think that includes shipping. Once you get the new cat, find a hole-in-the-wall muffler shop, they'll probably install it for $75.00-$100.00 american dollars, I'm SURE that's way cheaper than $1,300.00 CAD, correct?
