You say you have a hole in the tranny? So, is your transmission dry?

And how do you know you need an opti, are you sure whatever problems you are having won't be fixed by replacing the plugs and wires?

Water pump - Is the original water pump leaking? If not, why replace it?

Thermostat - Is your car not warming up to it's normal operating temperature. When thermostats go bad they stick open.

Oil pump - Why?

If I were you I'd replace the plugs and wires, change the oil and filter. Check all the fluids. And that is about it. You can change your tranny fluid and coolant also if you want, but don't feel like it's something you have to do right NOW. It can wait if need be.

Dealer said water is leaking from my water pump onto my Opti spark which is causing problems. They also said the Opti-Spark is causing an oil leak.

The water pump I just mentioned. One reason the list is big is because I want to get everything done ASAP, and mostly done at the same time.

The thermostat is the mod I'm gonna do with my CAI, my TB bypass, and the PCM tune of getting my fans at a lower temp.

The dealer told me that the fluids in my car are very old, they don't seem to have changed....so I would much rather flush everything out and refill everything and get everything cleaned while I'm changing my plugs etc. Are there any good engine cleaners that i can pop in my engine while the fluids are drained? As long as I have had the car, the coolant, nor the transmission fluid, brake fluid, or power steering fluid has been changed or filled.

The oil pump, hm, they said it was "damaged"?

The hole in my transmission is in the transfer case, which allows dirt etc. to corrode the inner parts of the transmission. They said that the tranny needs to be replaced as a WHOLE instead of just the transfer case, and the total from that would be about $2200. If I dont' need to replace the oil pump, I won't. Same thing with the Opti-Spark and water pump. But if they tell me water is leaking on my Opti, i need to replace both. People on here always tell me if I change my Opti, get a new water pump.

4200 dollars is the estimated quote COUNTING labor. That is obviously things I can't do myself, like the car getting rewired, and the transmission being fixed etc. There were a couple more things that I don't remember. I need to replace my PCV valve, can someone link me to a site that has one? They quote me $800 dollars for the tune-up, claiming "The LT1's are one of the hardest motors to do tune-ups on so we have to charge more."

Thanks for your help guys. If i don't need an oil pump, I'll cross that off my list, or check it myself.

You can cross flushing the transmission off the list since it needs a new one anyways...cool, I just saved you $80!

How the hell would they know the oil pump is damaged. Also, did they show you the transfer case on your transmission? These cars aren't four wheel drive.

Could be just a tranny mount. But I really think they're trying to rip you off, these cars don't have transfer cases.

the woman said it was a transfer case, which is the case around the transmission. If it is just a tranny mount, i'll buy a poly one and slap it on. they said it is the transmisson transfer case, which is the cover. that is exactly what they said.

Tell them to go ahead and throw in some muffler bearings and a rotary girder while they have the transfer case apart.

"hey, you've got a hole in your transmission, but its okay to drive 500 miles with some dye in the oil to see where a leak is coming from"

BTW- I hope this post is a joke, never heard anyone post a bunch of stuff like this, get angry when people are trying to help, and then go off and act like you know anything about cars.

You do know that a transfer case TRANSFERS power to front and rear diff's, maybe you got that Formula 4x4 special edition, you've got one fine collectors car there.

Go drive it off a bridge and see if it clears up you damaged oil pump.

I don't doubt they told you that, but I really want to know the name of this dealer.

1. I wasn't getting mad, how can you assume I'm mad by words typed on a computer when you have never talked to the person?

2. Sorry to break it to you but it's real, if I got a written quote I would scan it for you guys and show you.

3. I'M GOING BY WHAT THE DEALER SAID TO ME! NOT WHAT I CAME UP WITH! THE LIST OF THINGS I POSTED FOR THE TUNE-UP I AM DOING!

The name of the dealer is Haley Pontiac and GM in Richmond VA. off of midlothian turnpike. Do a google search on them, get the number and call them about a 97 Formula with the last name Deutinger and see what the problems are with it. you want to do it? go ahead. i'm not hiding anything, or i'm not lying about anything.

everything they told me I wrote down to be fixed.

Re: Repairs that need to be done to my car...

I dont think its a BS post, i think its a BS dealer. Get your car the **** out of there and get a second opinion! Times are VERY VERY VERY rough on repair shops lately with the 0% financing everyones buying new cars. They are rapeing everyone for as much as they can.

Also about your transmission, if it had a hole trans fluid would leak out at a pretty good rate, it wouldnt just let dirt in! Holes dont just appear in a case they are their from day 1 or it takes liek 20 years of living in salt to eat away enough metal (maybe) to make a hole in the case. YOU DONT NEED A TRANSMISSION! You would have LONG SINCE ran out of fluid if it had a hole in it!

On to the oil pump. Did your oil pressure ever drop down to near 0 when idleing? Or go under about half way while cruising? If it did it probably needs new bearings. Pump wouldnt help. Ask them EXACTLY what is wrong with the oil pump. I would LOVE to hear whats wrong. Also ask em to specifically tell you how they diagnosed it. Again YOU DO NOT NEED ONE!!!! Thats a HUGE labor charge and i gaurentee you dont need it. If you did youd also need a new engine right now.

Take it to another shop!!!!!
Take it to another shop!!!!!
Take it to another shop!!!!!
Take it to another shop!!!!!

I wasn't asking out of doubt, I just think everyone should avoid this dealer. I really think they are trying to scare you and say you need a bunch of unnecessary repairs.

There has got to be some other f-body people on here around Richmond, maybe someone can help you with a basic tune-up and you can take it from there.
