Repairs that need to be done to my car...
Repairs that need to be done to my car...
I just brought it in......NOT good news. I am rather upset. here is what needs to be replaced:
Transmission, hole in the case
Transmission mount
A tune up is 800 dollars
Re-wire-120 dollars
There is so much more that needs to be done...
I have constructed a list of Tune up parts for myself that I could possibly do myself.
NGK TR55 spark plugs
MSD spark plug wires at 8.5mm
Opti-Spark *I don't know where to get them, or how much they cost, can someone provide me a link????*
Electric water pump
Oil pump
Power steering and brake fluid filling
Flush transmission, engine, oil, radiator and refill everything, and clean engine.
Oil change
PCV valve??? They said I needed to replace it
160* thermostat
Fuel filter
Oil filter
That is what I need for a tune up. Do the MSD wires come in packs of 4 or 8? Total cost of repairs= $4200 dollars roughly. I am not paying $800 dollars for a tune up, so can anyone tell me how easily a tuneup can be done? I REALLY need to replace the Opti-Spark, so if someone can link me to that, I would appreciate it SO much.

Re: Repairs that need to be done to my car...
why would you replace all that. tune up for me is air filter $20, pluges and wires $50, oil and filter change $15, pcv $5, trany fluid, filter ,and gasket $40. how many miles on your car?
Re: Repairs that need to be done to my car...
Unless it's throwing codes i wouldn't replace the Opti yet - do plug/wire change and see what happens. Tranny mount is a 20 minute job - most of that time is spent just jacking up the car to get to the tranny mount. You can easily change both of those yourself - if you need a new tranny well you can do that yourself too if you are fairly competent but it can be a real PITA.
Changing your plugs and wires costs $800 at the dealer becuase it can be a pain - but that $800 is way inflated. Most dealer i've heard have quoted $600. At ayn rate - expect ot spend a good 4-6 hours changing your plugs and wires your ifrst time, maybe more. It's not realy HARD, just time consuming. It doesn't require any mechnical skills per se - just hope you don't have huge hands like i do
Most of hte other repairs you listed can be done easily. THermostat is a 5 minute swap. Fuel filter is extremely easy to get at on our cars. Oil change is about a 10 minute job. Transmiossion flush you need to drop the pan on the tranny so it's kinda messy but not difficult...most people install a plug as long as they got the pan off to make future flushes easier...something i should have done while i had my tranny out. I wouldn't install an electric water pump on a daily driver. If the thing dies you can really screw yourself - just get a stock replacement....the risk isn't really worth the horsepower gains IMO.

Re: Repairs that need to be done to my car...
the car has never had a tune up and it's almost 10 years old...
thanks for questioning why i need this stuff, instead of answering my real question. the car has NEVER ONCE had a tune up. and i can tell that by the condition the parts are in.
my opti is goig anyways, and when you replace the opti, you replace the water pump. it is a big cycle, you should know that by now. i replace one thing, i have to replace something else.

Re: Repairs that need to be done to my car...
Should I go ahead and replace the stock water pump and oil pump than, considering if I do need to change the Opti-Spark, I won't need to replace that stuff when i get the Opti-Spark fixed? The dealer told me the oil leaks they can't tell are coming from, but they think it may be coming from my intake, or my timing cover. They are going to put a dye in it, i'll drive it around for about 500 miles and bring it back and they are gonna put a blacklight to it. Ok here is what I am for SURE buying...
Plugs-18.00
Wires-Not sure if I need 2 boxes...1 box-79 2=159
160* Thermostat-20
Flush tranny, radiator, engine, oil, etc.
Add power steering and brake fluid
Does anyone know a good engine cleaner to pick up? For my tranny I was gonna put in some Lucas, it's in a white box. What about engine cleaner after I drain it?

Re: Repairs that need to be done to my car...
why did you buy this car if its literally falling apart if you dont have the $ to fix it. DOnt get mad at people asking why you need this stuff. Cause i bet half that stuff you dont need. Especially the oil pump. Especially from a dealer! Get a second opinion you are being taken.
People are trying to help you and your getting mad at them. Many people here know these cars inside and out backwatds and forwards, LISTEN TO THEM AND THEIR QUESTIONS!

Re: Repairs that need to be done to my car...
dude, i'm not getting mad.
you think when i bought the car last year, that it would just start falling apart...i'm not an idiot.
why would someone buy a car if they knew it was going to fall apart...makes no sense to me, does it make sense to you? saying *why the hell are you replacing your oil pump* is NOT helping me, it's questioning my intelligence.
if i knew this car would have to have a new transmission i bought it from carmax, i wouldn't have bought it in the first place. things have happened in the past year, and it's been going downhill. the crap literally all started at once.

Re: Repairs that need to be done to my car...
That is a huge list, and most likely you don't need to do these things.
You say you have a hole in the tranny? So, is your transmission dry?
And how do you know you need an opti, are you sure whatever problems you are having won't be fixed by replacing the plugs and wires?
Water pump - Is the original water pump leaking? If not, why replace it?
Thermostat - Is your car not warming up to it's normal operating temperature. When thermostats go bad they stick open.
Oil pump - Why?
If I were you I'd replace the plugs and wires, change the oil and filter. Check all the fluids. And that is about it. You can change your tranny fluid and coolant also if you want, but don't feel like it's something you have to do right NOW. It can wait if need be.

Re: Repairs that need to be done to my car...
Best I can tell from all your ranting is that the answer you seek is that you can get an Opti from Team Chevrolet, Dal, or Jason Cromer. I won't insult your intelligence by spoon-feeding you the link though, since it's only discussed every other day here and I'm sure you're capable of finding it. Replacing it sounds a bit premature to me as well though, but it's your money...shame on everyone for trying to help and save you some!
The MSD wires come in packs of 8, plus 1 or 2 coil wires usually.
As others have said though, it sounds like you're going off the deep-end and should step back and address the issues one by one. $4200 is ludicrous...probably 1/3-1/2 of what the car is worth realistically...
