Removing Thermostat???

Im Wondering If You Can Simply Remove The Thermostat All Together? Or Does It Have Some Seals To Keep The Top From Leaking?

Im Just Wondering Cause Im Thinking Of Removing It And Not Even Worry About Replacing It With The 160*.

Anyone Done This?

don't do that! This is never a good idea, it will not allow your engine to regulate the tempature. A 160 thermo opens the same amount as a 220, but the difference is the 160 opens up sooner, thats the only difference. Remember if these parts were not needed then car manufactures wouldn't waste their money on putting them in their cars.by removing it you can loose horsepower.

agreed...don't do it

first off the car will have a hard time warming up which can affect short trip reliability and gas milage.

and most importantly, it will allow coolant to flow through the block unregulated and at much greater speed. this doesn't allow the required time for heat transfer from the block to the coolant. therefore it can cause your engine block to be running much hotter than your temp guage indicates.

bad idea

exactly, but you could make a restrictor out of your old thermostat. thatll make it run cooler and you wont have to worry about a sticky thermostat ever again.

Even this is not a good idea on an LT1. Unlike a SBC, the placement of the thermostat is in the water pump that has a series of complex passages. The long thermostat not only allows coolant flow, but is made to seal off certain passages when it reaches it's regulating temperature. Without the long thermostat, coolant will not be routed in/out of the engine like it is designed to be.

Re: Removing Thermostat???

well sounds like ill just order the 160 from slp.

now i know that they are not legal here in california, but will it lower the temp so much that it will actually keep the cats from working well enough to keep me from passing emissions?

thanks guys.

It literally takes 15 minutes to swap so if you have to get your inspection done swap it back.

Another falacy. Thermostats don't have any affect on your max temp. They merely determine the min temp the cooling system will run at, once the engine has warmed up. Thats why no stat is bad. On the highway, there would be nothing to keep the engine from cooling down to the low hundreds (way too cold.) Max temp is controlled by the water pump flow, radiator size and efficency, and fan size and turn-on points. If you don't reprogram your fans, or install a controller, your car will still heat up to around 220 will idling. All you have to do is let your engine idle for a while, prior to the test, and it will warm up nicely.

You have a supercharger and a cam and are worried about a thermastat, causing you to fail? I don't live in CA, but I would say there is no way that they will check the thermastat. I would not worry about it at all.
