removing lower timing gear
im sorry if this sounds like a stupid question.. im exhausted and freezing and my brains not on 100% right now
the lower gear, on the crank, has that little keyway thing to keep the timing gear from spinning on the crank. does that little keyway thing get pushed down as the gear is coming off? i was crankin on the damn puller and the timing gear wouldn't budge! i already snapped a pep boys timing gear remover so i had to grind down and modify one i had already. i have the leverage/puller etc but im afraid of damaging the motor.
is there anything else im missing? i know its gonna be obvious.. should i just go for broke and just crank on it harder? i dont wanna F up the crank,..
can someone help a brother out?

The key is normally not in the way, as the gear has to slide over it to go on.

the part of the key that is raised over the surface of the crank, does it press down to become flush with the crank or does the timing gear have the indentation to allow it to slide over the raised key?
