why? there's no HP gain by doing this and it's illegal. you'll never pass emissions without them.

if you still want to do this you'll need to delete your rear 02 bungs or leave the sensors there....and reprogram your ECM to have the rears deleted as well within the computer system. while you're reprogramming your ecm opt for the whole program. you'll wonder why you hadnt before. you wont need to mess with air/fuel because they're decided by the upper 02 sensors...the only thing the rears do is tell you whether or not the cats are working.

Re: REMOVING cats on 96 lt1

unless they're smelling really bad or you've been running really rich for about 20k miles you shouldnt have any problems. do they rattle?

the bungs i was talking about are the threads that the sensors plug into. i read your double post and remembered about the sims...you could run them if you want to punch out the cats...but you'd really be better off replacing them.

random tech has a dual cat setup that's really nice...it's 550 bucks but it's awesome. other than that i'd jsut run some cheapo ebay magnaflow cats...they're only 60 each and they're high flow.

FYI on those oxygen simulators, bought a set of MIL eliminators for mine off e-bay for $20. Supposedly same as the simulators you would normally purchase for $200, but a little extra legwork. Instead of replacing the sensor with the simulator, all I needed to do was splice this small wired resistor into the purple wire of the oxygen sensors. Cleared the codes and poof, after my drive cycle of 5-6 mins @ 50-60mph in 5th gear, my sensors set and still no SES light.

Unless magnaflow has come out with some sort of "cheapo" drivers side catalytic converter there is no such thing since it is just off the collector with an extremely obnoxious flange that joins the Y-pipe.
And no gains?
The only thing technically bad about removing the cats is that it's illegal. It's just that a 96-97 car it's more challenging due to what was mentioned above. The best route to stay cheap and remove the cats is to get OBDI style headers (Macs are good) and flange the cat for off-road use. Even though it still may be "illegal" emissions techs don't usually know what they're looking for and if they see a catyletic converter then they're happy. Most don't even look under the car since all they have to do is plug a connector into the data port for OBDII.

I have a '97 that had dual cats. I replaced the Y-pipe with a stainless steel catless version from StainlessWorks out of the Summit catalog....$300.00. I already had the rear O2's programmed out a while back so no need for simms. Some here had problems with this brand, I didn't. It bolted up easily, and no leaks or any defects whatsoever. With the 150K+ miles I had on my car it made a nice difference on the top-end, plus it made my cutout loud as hell.

Any track times to compare?

Nope, soon though. I threw on a bunch of boltons last year I have yet to test out. Best prior to the madZ28 tune, Mez. w.p., and catless Y-pipe was a 14.00 @ 102mph, 2.2 60'.
