Reccomendations.
Reccomendations.
Hey guys. Bad news for the dealership, my block is cracked and they are replacing the bitch right now. Sucks for them, good for me. They said I could get free installation on performance parts if I wanted them. I need some reccomendations! I do not want the car in the shop long, so I need parts fast. I am located in Ohio and will probably be buying parts from GMR sports, pep boys (employee discount), or locals selling the parts. What should I do?! I was thinking a cam, headers, ported head, better clutch? What do you guys think and where should I get the parts?
Re: Reccomendations.
Ok...a few questions for you.
1. are there any stipulations on what parts you can buy (Usually dealerships say only GM parts due to warranty issues and whatnot)
2. You gotta pass emissions?
3. Can they program it for you? (Most of them cant and have to rely on aftermarket tunes i.e. madz28 or PCMforless)
4. How do you drive and whats the car going to be used for?
5. Are you going to want to get gears? (Certain cams like gears, I dont want to go as far to say cams 'require' them)
6. Is it a stock lt1 block going back in? i.e. stock replacement 5.7LT1 Vin P engine?
Answering those should help you get more suggestions and determine what you want.

Re: Reccomendations.
It is a used car dealership with their own terms of warranty. They encouraged me to get headers, so i doubt they care about emmissions. And in Ohio, very few countys have emmission standards (and are being nullified too). I doubt they can program it for me. I do not think I am going to get gears, but I looked at the hot cam kit from summit and it looks likea good deal. Is that all i need to set the kit up with? Any other mods suggested? I believe it is a stock block also, next time I talk to the dealership owner, I will ask and see what he found out.
Re: Reccomendations.
Might as well get some headers...Jet hot usually had good deals...Hot cam kit is good...but I feel you might get used to it and want more...but will set you up with the valvetrain for now...Dont go to radical on the cam if you dont get gears...getting good power is about getting it all matched up. But if you want a full kit rather than buying seperate...a hotcam kit is a good way to go...but if you get any cam...get headers.
As for other mods...Throttle body (but not really needed 'that much')
Get the double roller kit for it (timing chain)
Get a tune for it once its done. PCMforless kicks ***...email Brian

Re: Reccomendations.
Ok: since I have a couple minutes to spare (now don't take this personally and I may be wrong) but allow me to opine.
1. Used car dealers are usually those that bid on cars that new car dealers do not want to sell.
2. Used cars rarely come with any warranties other than the first 1000 miles or 10 minutes, whichever comes first.
3. Used car dealers rarely have machanics (usually just peopoe who spray gunk and the engines, armoral on the tires and a christmas treee on the rear view mirror.
4. If they really are going to replace the engine, it will probably be from the bone yard and not a very good platform to modify because it'll plrobablyl blow up in short order.
5. If you want headers, cam, etc., you most likely will be paying through the nose for labor, etc.
6. If you do wind up with having them (or whomever) do the labor, you are going to become quite familiar with what is referred to as a "mechanics lien" which essentially means that if you don't pay the bill, you don't get the car.
As I mentioned, don't take this personally, but I trust you know what you are doing, because it seems a bit strange to me.
If I were you, I' ask for my money back or another car---this puppy might cost you more than you think. JMHO

Re: Reccomendations.
Why are you even talking buddy? This is me asking for help on what I should do to my car. I was not asking for a critique, sherlock. Please, do not talk anymore. You are serving me no good and are just filling these forums with the typical junk/arguements that make it so hard to get good information from a forum. Getting my money back is not a intelligent option at all. I am getting a rebuilt engine. I am getting free installation from the owner. Use your head.
ANYWAYS.
How much would the hotcam kit from summit give me power wise? When you buy one, does the cam have to be specifically made for the car, or is it more of a bolt on deal? What other modifications would benefit that gain.....I have heard ported heads can really. I am sorry for all the questions, I am a beginner and just want to learn.

Re: Reccomendations.
What are you, 12? You asked for recommendations and I gave you my recommendation. No, I won't any more...and that's why my usual attitufe is not give give advice, since wise men don't need it and fools don't heed it.
I was just making an exception in your case, but live and learn.

Re: Reccomendations.
It's rather surprising they'd encourage performance parts as many normal mechanics don't even want to install anything aftermarket. Also installing headers and what not is a lot more work then just bolting on the exhaust manifolds. But if everythign is legit and these are good mechanics it sounds like you got a great deal.
People with hot cam kits and full bolts seem to be making around 330ish RWHP. Which is a nice jump from stock. I wouldn't advise getting a double roller chain because you need an EWP for it and the timing cover has to be clearanced. Stock LT1 replacement or the LT4 HD one is a good choice. Definately don't throw the stock one back in there. If your on any sort of budget and you want your car back soon i'd stick with the stock heads castings. It takes a few weeks to get heads back from a porter.
