Rebuilding a Motor?
Rebuilding a Motor?
When I change my cam, which hopefully will be in 2-3 months...
I will be changing:
Cam
Timing Chain
Pushrods
Valve Springs
Roller Rockers
Lifters
Plus a valve job
This will restore some of my motors life right? How much more of the motor other then the crank, connecting rods, pistons, and heads can I change to increase my motor durability/life?

Re: Rebuilding a Motor?
Without a bottom end rebuild there isn't much more you can do. Ugrading the valvetrain is definitly going to help. The bottom end of the LT1s has been known to take a beating and keep on running stong. So as long as you take care of it, it should last awhile.

Re: Rebuilding a Motor?
The life of the components you do change will be improved. The life of those components you don't change will be exactly what they are now, or less. The new cam will convince you to thrash the old pistons, rods, and crank, and that may end in tears as those are without doubt the most important parts of the engine - the reciprocating parts are the ones that blow up.
Re: Rebuilding a Motor?
How many miles on your car? In general, unless a motor is nearly new or only has a relatively few miles since the last rebuild, once it's apart it would be silly not to do the rings and bearings. As far as CR goes, it will need to be in the correct range for the cam you chose. Most big cams need a higher CR for maximum gain.

Re: Rebuilding a Motor?
Well i'm thinking about replacing the pistons and connecting rods while i'm down there, but then I figured i'd throw in a new crank!! But I think thats pushing my financial limits...
I'm just hoping for mid 12's safely on my motor. I was hoping changing the cam and all those other parts I mentioned should give my motor some extra life.
