Rear wheel clearence!!!!
I want to know if a 315/40/17 tire will fit the rear end of my 1996 Pontiac WS-6 without tubbing or cutting of anything. My brother says it's been done, but just want to make sure.1996 Pontiac Trans-Am WS-6
De-screened MAF
Cross drilled and slotted rotors up front
52mm Motorsport Technologies throttle body
K & N filter element
3 3/4 in. Edelbrock cat-back exhaust with 4x12in. chrome tips
Nitto 555 extreme drag radial's 285/40/17
Edelbrock box tubing lower control arms, powdercoated black
depends man, can't say for sure if it will or not. I have 315/35/17's, i had to take out the bumpstops and pound the mounts flat with a mini sledge. Some ppl just had to grind them down alittle. i DID NOT have to bang out the wheel wells though. I would just buy them, put them on, if u have clearance issues, then get out the sledge and go to town, takes out some stress too
Get a tape measure, make some measurements, and then check the results here: http://4lo.com/4LoCalc.htm
And confirm the actual sizes with the manufacturer (not retailer), before you spend hundreds of dollars on something that will be a pain in the butt to make work.

I don't think the 315/35 will fit good on the stock WS6 wheel. The 315 is about 1-1/2" wider than your stock 275. It WILL fit, but it will be bulged out.....which is not recommended.

He means 315/35-17, because there is no 315/40....
A 315/35 requires 17x11 wheels, with a 50mm offset, and a 7.93" backspace... in essence the Corvette 1996 Grand Sport wheel. With that wheel, and the 315's, you MIGHT need to do the following:
Cut the corner off the jounce bumper bracket so the wheel doesn't catch it when you jack the car:
Cut jounce bumper
Hammer the inner fenders a little (coat with rubberized undercoat when you are done, and it will not be real visible. You probably won't have to do this much, but I also was trying to fit a pair of 28x10.5-15W ET Drags
:
Hammer inner fenders
Recenter the body over the axle with an adjustable panhard rod. Probably not required, unless it wasn't too even from the factory.
End results
I emphasized the work "might" because every time I post these pics, someone will post that they used the same wheels and tires and didn't have to do any of the above.
