Rear Main Seal Install-help Needed

What do I have to take out other than the tranny. My tranny is blown to pieces so I want to replace my rear main seal in my motor while im there. Isit true that i have to drop my oil pan among other problems?

yes, u need to drop the pan. The back two left and right studs on back of the pan are screwed into the real main seal housing which needs to be taken off.

Nope you do not have to drop the pan If the tranny is out it is a 2 minute job (of course you have to have the tranny out to do it)

Just pry the old one out with a screwdriver and then coat the rear main seal with oil and put it back in easy!

Poor man I just changed my oil pan gasket today and am putting the main seal in later on today I replaced it a few months ago its fine but since I have it apart.... Anyways if you JUST replacing the main seal the pan does not have to be dropped if you replacen the housing gasket then yes you have to drop the pan.

In fact in the GM service manual it does not require to drop the pan so its not like I'm doing it half *** or anything!

Same as what I have read. If you remove the housing, you have to drop the pan. It can be changed without removing the housing and therefore no dealings with the pan.

Trust me after what I just went through you don't want to drop the pan and risk messing up the gasket if you dont' want to
