Are rear jounce bumpers really necessary?

Before I put my car in storage for the winter I noticed that the rear jounce bumpers (those bumpers at the top of the inside of the wheelwell) were dry rotted. So I removed them since they surely weren't doing any good like that. Should I replace them, and if so, does anyone know if there is a polyurethane replacement part available?

I've never seen a pair that didn't look dry rotted. They are necessary so I would just put the old ones back on. I don't know if a poly replacement is available.

I agree that on most cars it's unnecessary. I guess it would depend on the amount of clearance you have inside you rear tire well. Not knowing his wheel/tire combo then I guess it would be OK to run that way if he would just pull the rear coil springs, bottom the car out, and see if he's gonna have a tire hit anything in the fenderwell. I still don't see why someone wouldn't just leave them in though.

they blocked my 15x10's from fitting easily, and where they were mounted too was cut away for tire clearance.

SLP sells jounce spacers for larger diameter wheels. I think they're $25.

:werd: The bolts are also long enough that you can do the same thing with some washers. I'm running 17x11's in the back.

I cut mine and pushed them back about anhalf an inch or so when I slapped the X11's in...They serve some prupose...had a nice wear pattern from them on my Axle housing.

The bumpers are a good idea... keep them. When you bottom out the shocks, you can damage them, particularly if you are running adjustables.

My 17x11/315's required cutting the outer edge off the bracket, but nothing else.

Jounce bumper surgery.....

From my part numbers page:

1993-1997 rear jounce bumper 10164173 and they have gone up about 50% in price since I put the number on my page. Maybe it is because they are white like Charlie said.

I'm sort of curious as to if anyone knows why they are different now.
