this is a really stupid exhaust question I am asking?

Ok, I hope I don't get made fun of for this but here it is. I have bbk shorties w/ cats and want pacesetter longtubes but my car is lowered. I know that normally long tubes have less restriction in the exhaust so you would therefore gain some power back. Could I not just make an exhaust cut out immediately after the cats on my bbk shorties to gain some more horsepower. I am thinking this would gain alot of power because I am not getting any restrictions from the mufflers or any of the pipes that are past the cats on my bbk shorties. Am I completely wrong and would this still not be near longtube headers that has mufflers.

If it was me and I was going to add a cutout it would be pre-cat (If I had cats). If you go open watch out for the knock retard.

He wasnt calling the guy a retard. The computer pulls timing when it hears knock, aka, knock retard

As for ther rest of your post i cant make much sense of it.

Re: this is a really stupid exhaust question I am asking?

Basically what I was trying to say is longtube headers which usually don't have cats can flow exhaust alot easier therefore giving you more horsepower, so I was wondering why can't I just put exhaust cut outs after the last cats on my bbk headers and this be close to the same thing as having longtube headers. There won't be any exhaust running through the pipes and mufflers due to the cut outs that are right after the cats, so I figured I would gain quite a bit of horsepower cause there is not that restriction in flow that the would of been if I didn't have the cut outs. Would this still not even be close to running longtubes that don't have cut outs and that are still hooked up to mufflers?

Yeah, i could understand your post. It would work, it would just be loud as hell.

Never thought of it that way.

About the question. Yeah Adding a cutout and reducing restriction on the exhaust flow should increase power. Knock retard, guys have posted saying they loose power with open cutouts because of the timing adjustments that are made when false knock is detected, this may be somthing that you run into. It will probably not be as good as LTs and then cutouts, but it will be an improvement. Agreed It will be loud.

Might want to add a "signature" with basic info, like the year of your car. You mention BBK shorties and cats (plural).... are you saying you have the 96/97 dual-cat headers, and a high flow Y-pipe with dual cats?

Then you mention "put exhaust cut outs after the last cats"... what do you mean by "last cats"? You have one in each branch of the Y-pipe (assuming you have a 96/97).

See what problems lack of info on your car can cause?

Yeah my car is a 1996 z28 and it has one cat on each header, so I was thinking of putting a cut out right after each cat before it goes into a single pipe so there would be two total cut outs, or do you think I should just put only one cut out where both the pipes meet into one single pipe. Also now I am scared my engine will retard because of the exhaust being so loud, do you think this will happen. Thanks for all of yall's help.

difference between long tubes and shorties is placement of collectors. long tubes are still ultimately the way to go. i hate my rk sports, i make sure i say that everytime i make a post in an exhaust thread. if anyone wants to trade their long tubes for my rk sports and borla that have terrible ground clearance, i would love to

Long tubes don't necessarily "flow" better, they "scavenge" better.

Anyway, good luck finding a shop that would install cut-outs before the cat. convertors because it's illegal. Might wanna find a buddy with a welder for that one.

Well I plan on doing it after my cats because I am afraid I may burn my exhaust valves up if I do it before the cats and I will weld the cut out with my friend anyhow. Also should I do the cut outs right after each cat or just do one cut out right when the pipes turn into the single pipe.
