Really basic Ignition Coil Wiring...

Well here's one, I went to start my LT1....no spark. There are some suspicious connectors on the coil module I think need to have wires going into....check http://www.geocities.com/clazarowitz/coil.html and tell me what you think, I got the 4 wire connector at the top but on the bottom....actually let me circle them. Yellow I know, red I don't.
Thanks

Well, yellow is the ICM and red is the coil. What was the question again?

The problem is I see nothing around that plugs in there....I was kinda hoping for a picture so I at least see if I am looking for connector or connectors, wire colors, and worst case where they go so I can make new lines so maybe I can get this LT1 started some time this year! (Ok, it hasn't been a year but I got the thing back in february....)

Ahh. Look at this pic. Now, I have an MSD harness that only uses one plug to the coil, but if you look to the right in the pic, you can see the two plugs (with pink wires)that would go to the coil (if they weren't going to the MSD harness adapter). One is black and the other gray. They have notches on them so that they can fit together.

Well I added a few pics to that page listed above, Just found what I believe to be some weirdness with the ICM connector and some other unknown connector. I may yet go out there tonight to see if I see those *^%* wires that go into the coil....if not tomorrows high temp is supposed to be a cool 82º here in Hatfield, PA so I'll find them then.
Would you happen to have a wiring diagram for the ICM and related connectors? I might need to run new wires so it would help to know where they go...otherwise I might have to beg a local dealer to see theirs lol.
Thanks for all so far!

i have the hi-6. i ordered a harness to go with my LT-1 but the coil has dual plugs like yours. the harness the kit came with only plugged into the one side of the stock coil. i called crane and they told me the coil only needs to have one of the two plugs on it. they said either one will fire the coil. what is the ignition control module for? thanks.

1995 Schematic

If that is a harness from a 1996 or later, it will have one connector to the coil that has three wires in it. I think that might be the connector just above and to the left of the one you indicated in the new pics you added. If so, you will need a later model one connector coil.

[edit] The 1996-97 coil only has two wires (pink and dark green). That looks to be the connector on the far left of your pic.

Well crap and double crap. That schematic is the same one I found in the chiltons.....very difficult to place which wires go where, and a 96 harness.....man...this just keeps getting more and more complicated. I'll have to see if I can get a 96 coil for cheap. Otherwise I will have to borrow a helm and go through a wiring diagram and figure out where all the wires go...then I'll just use some blade connectors and shove 'em into the coil. If you have any other diagrams of the coil, ICM, and where each wire goes, or if you can help me interpret where that schematic says they are going, or if you are really crazy trace some wires for me I'd appreciate it. In the mean time I will try and find a coil for cheap (no parts for these cars are ever cheap...) and if I run outta stuff to do, I'll solder up a 'noid light and make sure the PCM is firing the injectors...

Ok I did some legwork here today. I went to pep boys (I know....) who said they had the right coil....well turns out they did, but they didn't have the coil wire. I wasn't sure so I went to a dealer. They showed me the proper coil, but again, they didn't have the proper coil wire, nor could they find the right part number. The problem was the secondary winding output on the '96 and newer coils has the same connector that the opti-spark has so you need a wire with 2 of them. The GM parts program showed the wire as being the old style one which had a spark plug head for a secondary winding output (Not sure if that has an official name or not lol) So, I am left with keeping my coil, but, the dealer says they can get the connectors for the old coil. When I pick them up tomorrow I will post part numbers. Also, just in case anyone wants them. I had some service manual pages photocopied, and then I scanned them. The have to deal with the ignition coil wiring. They can be found at http://www.geocities.com/clazarowitz...schematic.html Please download them and share them with others if it helps!
I'll post results as well tomorrow...

This should be the part info for your coil wire (from my part number web page):

1996-1997 coil wire
ACDelco part # 346U
GM p/n 12173578

You should be able to get one from a parts place that sells ACDelco parts, not just the dealer.

Actually, unless you have purchased one of these, that is wrong. I say unless, because we looked at that part number in their system and it showed a 90º plug going into the coil and the coil as having the old plug on it. Now this could be a problem with their system, but I wasn't going to waste a day on parts because of that. That info could be in an old post on this board, I didn't search....Anyways, I'm a glutten for punishment (and a cheapskate), so I have the new old style connectors for the old style coil coming in tomorrow and I am going to play match that wire up with the schematics I posted

Those part numbers should be good. ACDelco.com and AC-direct.com both agree (plus the GM part book). It does have a right angle boot on the coil end.

the one the guy pulled up at the parts counter had a right angle boot, but it looked like it would fit on a spark plug. The coil had a deep set plug that looked EXACTLY like the connectors on the optispark for the spark plug wires. This is why I say that is the wrong coil wire. The guy assumed he had one mis labled/mis-shipped until we looked in the diagrams. At that we still assumed that the diagram was probably wrong, and he could just order one in (if it was wrong, they'd send it back no big deal), but the loss of a day wasn't worth it. I wasn't going to say order both knowing that one of the 2 parts would be returned. Maybe I should just try and be more selfish, but I couldn't see them shipping and restocking 1 of those items...You are right though, everywhere I had looked listed the same part number, but the only illustrations I could find put it identical to the older coil wire, and upon seeing the coil, made no sense at all.
Often I would try and go hunt down the exact part and let everyone else know for the sake of the next guy with this silly problem, but I thought I was already asking alot when I had him look up the connectors (which was a bit of a pain) AND see their service manuals....on top of that, the mechanic that was still on duty got me books without the right sections in them (I assumed he knew what he was talking about) so I walked back to their storage area unsupervised and went through the books until I had the right ones, then had them photocopy them....I thought I had pushed my luck far enough, and again the whole restock fee...Also, I really just want to get my car running, I havent driven the thing since October 2002 when the 700R4 gave out!
