Ran out of gas

I managed to run out of gas on my way up to the Amoco, and I'm wondering if I've done any irreparable damage to my fuel system by sucking in any sediment that may have been at the bottom of my tank. From what I've read I really should just change my fuel filter, but I'm wondering if any damage to my fuel pump could have been done and how I should check. I put some fuel system treatment in with a full tank of Amoco 93 octane (I always run 93) to hopefully free up any sediment that may have gotten past the filter. What else am I looking at? The car seems to run just fine - just change the fuel filter?

Thanks.

It's not the sediment that is your biggest concern, but whether you overheated the pump or not. Either way, it's not 100% sure whether you will be able to see the effects now, later or if you'll ever see them (no damage). If after changing the fuel filter, your car runs like crap or doesn't start at all, then it's the fuel pump.

I've done it myself a few times and I guess I was lucky that my pump didn't die, but trust me, it won't happen again.

Even running with an almost empty gas tank is bad because fuel is what cools the pump.

I ran out once going up a hill with no problems.

I replaced the fuel filter even though it was still running fine just out of precaution. That was about 2 years ago and the fuel pump is still fine.

Yeah, I ran out going up a hill, too. I'd imagine I'll be okay changing the fuel filter. If it comes to replacing the fuel pump, I'll just get the fuel pump replaced (I've heard it is a sincere PITA, but I'll get it done if I need it...)

Thanks for your help!

Not easy. You have to either pull the axle, or cut a hole just above the pump to access it. Do a search.. there was even a video of the cutting a hole version and there's plenty of websites that explain how to do it the other way.
