Ram air or cold air?

I have a 95 LT1 T/A with a factory ram air hood I believe from a 97 as it was on the car when I bought it so not sure. I would like to make this ram air hood functional if not to expensive. would I be better off doing a cold air setup or making ram air work. Which will gain me more HP? where is a good place to get the parts. Any opinions are appreciated

Their assumed to be about equal. A cold air is a little less "in the way". And to make it functional you would need the tubing, and a good filter. I wuold imagine it would cost the same as a LPE CAI (160$) and perform about the same. A while ago people were taking the baffels out of them so thats something to keep in mind to do?

Depends on if you can find a deal on an airbox. If the hood is fully functional, all you need is the airbox, filter, and a pair of Fernco couplers to joint the Airbox/MAF/TB.

Re: Ram air or cold air?

Theoretically a ram air intake is a little better than a CAI due to the straighter intake tract. supposably its a little better tuned

Re: Ram air or cold air?

Personally I think it's better CAI than a aftermarket CAI; ignoring the supossed RA effects.

I've got a completely de-baffled hood, and most of the loovers removed off the airbox. If I remove the airfilter, close the hood, and look through the openings.... I can see my TB blades... can't get much better than that.

Re: Ram air or cold air?

The picture of the ones I seen from SS Camaros sure werent as free flowing. They were definatly not a straight design, The scoop was back to far on the hood so they kinda looped back to the front.

Tommorow or Saturday Ill post a pic if anyone wants to see what I mean.

This can also be seen in the Feb 06' issue of GM High Tech Performance where they have a 10th Aniversary article with a 96 Camaro SS and a Mustang Cobra. On the other side of things, TA's look like their scoop may be mounted clkoser to the front explaining the straight through design.

well call me an idiot with these forums but I have no clue how to post a picture or I would post one of my car. on the other hand I would like to see pics of your car ( 97 formula ws-6) because like I said I believe it is a 97 hood so I should be able to get some ideal of what I am looking for.
BTW thanks for the help fellas.

Re: Ram air or cold air?

I'll post some pictures of the hood and some archive pictures tonite; the car is dis-assembled for a major upgrade right now.

As for HardcoreRM125's comments; the SS ram-air intake setup is VERY different than the WS6 setup witha complete 360* turn in the intake track Vs the WS6 which is a straight-shot into the Throttlebody.

Re: Ram air or cold air?

Wow they do look WAY better than te SS's .... I seen the SS one in the magazine and it almost looked like a cold air tube bolted on sideways with more of a ben d to it. I was like WTF is that ???

Re: Ram air or cold air?

Great Pics man, the fernco fitting I am assuming is a 4" for joining clay or cast iron to pvc? besides that what other parts will I need to make that work? and do you know where I can get them? I also assume that this is on a 94 since that is your sig, what year is the Airbox assembly or does it matter?

Once again thanks for the great help

Re: Ram air or cold air?

THe WS6 style like what Fred (Injuneer) has on his car is WAY better then the Camaro SS design. I got into a debate years ago over this and by switching to Cold Air I ran two tenths quicker in my 97 Camaro SS.

I say go for it.

How safe is it to run a debaffled hood scoop everyday?

Are those two metal bars going across the air box?

Re: Ram air or cold air?

Chris, I dont think Injuneer runs his car everyday, espeicaly not in the rain. As for the 2 rods, when you cut the plastic "grill" off ur ws6 ram air box for more air flow, ya know the one that says ws6 and has a whole bunch of slots that restrict air to the actual intake box, lol. Yes those 2 bars are to hold it together and stop it from colapsing, keeps it rigid.

Re: Ram air or cold air?

I wouldn't run a completely de-baffled car everyday, but you can remove some of the baffles and still be ok.

The metal bars are what was described, to re-inforce the box because the entire center was removed.

The Fernco couplers you can get at any local hardware store for about $5 a piece. You need the 3" ones, and boil them in water for a minute or 2 to soften them up, then install them.

I run a full one between the TB and MAF, and one cut in half between the Airbox and MAF.
