Question Ram Air Airbox--cut out the vanes?

Here's a question for you guys running the ws6 style ram air airbox. Would cutting out the vanes on the front improve airflow? The seem pretty constrictive, covering about half the surface area of the air filter. Would it make any difference? Or should I leave mine stock? I've seen pics of engines where the air filter is totally exposed and it looks cool.

Thanks,

Rob

A buddy on mines did. He swore it made a difference...at least in a sucking sound. See pic.

I cut mine out as well, but it was part of a round of things I did so I didn't have a back to back comparison.

I cant imagine it making much of a difference. Its like taking the screen off your MAF sensor, its just one of those things you do when your bored.

I wouldn't cut it. It will make the top of the box weak. I left mine alone, can't see it making much difference.

I have mine trimmed... some bars are removed, others were left... don't know about the airflow.. although I would believe it may help somewhat.. even though the fins direct the airflow through the filter instead of then having to bounce off the back of the airbox/seal...

Actually, it doesn't. I've taken the top part off many times to maintain the filter and it's fine.

That's cool. I thought it would. But like 97FormulaWS-6, if you look, the fins do direct the airflow across the top of the filter.

I've seen guys in magazines do it with an airbox that looks different from the ws6 one...most of them were running high performance rigs.

I'm wondering though...the air filter has got to be one of the less restrictive parts of the intake system. Following the logic of, for example, the heads, where grinding out the intake ports doesn't do so much since they already flow well, maybe it wouldn't make much of a difference? Could it even perhaps slow down the air going in, resulting in a slight torque loss? Any engineers want to chime in?
